There is only a John Alfred Steel registered on NZ BMD in 1892, his parents are Hannah Mary & Tom .

Hi cupcake
When looking at New Zealand electoral rolls to see if John Bernard STEEL was maybe living with members of his family at any time, I came across a 1928 listing for the Wellington South electorate which showed >
STEEL - John Bernard - tailor
STEEL - Louise Evelyn - married
and >
STEEL - Henry Charles - storeman
... all residing at 164 Riddiford Street, Newtown, Wellington.
Suspecting that Henry Charles STEEL may be related to John Bernard, I followed up on Australian records.

Thought there may have been a New Zealand or Australian WW1 Army file for John B. STEEL -- (didn't find anything) ??
However, there was an Australian Army Service record for Henry Charles STEEL. An original Service number was listed for WW1 ... with a further service number given for WW2 to which was annexed an Attestation form, giving some personal information.

Seems that John Bernard STEEL didn't serve in WW1.
This listing though from "New Zealand Army Reserves Roll - 1916-1917".

Hi again cupcake
I hadn't seen your earlier (very lengthy ;) ) thread on the Australia Board, before I posted the previous information here.
Having now waded through the many posts of your Australian thread, can see that you've posted (at Reply # 149) the Death Certificate transcription for John STEEL (father of William H. / Henry C. STEEL and John B. STEEL) ... and that Reply # 150 contains info relating to "John Bernard STEEL in New Zealand".
Usually it's helpful for us to know if "the person / persons, for whom info is being sought, are the subjects of other threads " ... or there are previous details which might assist a search ... (although in this instance it probably means that I wouldn't have happened upon "Henry Charles STEEL" living with his brother in New Zealand). ;D
Anyway, I hope the extra information I've added here, is of assistance in eliminating (or otherwise) John B. STEEL from your search.

Hi cupcake
No, John B. STEEL, (otherwise, John Bernard STEEL), was NOT born in New Zealand.
In my Reply # 3 here, I posted what I thought was probably his birth in New South Wales, Australia,
> 1892 - STEEL - John B. - Father: John / Mother: Lizzie : And also his Death registration 1931 (Sydney, NSW) which gives his parents names as "John J. and Elizabeth A.".
[That same information has also been given in your Australian thread. ]
You have the Death Certificate for his father > John STEEL - saddler - died 31 July 1928 at Sydney, Spouse: Elizabeth Agnes RADCLIFF - Children: William J. (40), Henry C. (38) and John B. (36) -- Reference # NSW - 1928/12888 :
John STEEL (a.k.a. John Joseph STEEL) - d. 1928, Elizabeth Agnes STEEL - died 1893, and their grandson, Herbert John STEEL* - died 30 April 1932, are buried at Waverley Cemetery, Sydney.
[Note: * Herbert John STEEL was the son of John Bernard STEEL and Louise Evelyn STEEL, and brother of Joyce, as per his funeral notice published in "Sydney Morning Herald" - 2 May 1932. ]
So just to sum up >
- John Bernard STEEL - born 1892 - Sydney, NSW, Australia (s/o John STEEL and Elizabeth Agnes RADCLIFF)
- John Bernard STEEL married 1915 in New Zealand to Louise Evelyn LOVELL (she was born in NZ).
He ran a tailoring business in the suburb of Newtown, Wellington, New Zealand. Still on electoral roll there in 1928.
- John Bernard STEEL / Louise Evelyn STEEL and Henry Charles STEEL (brother of John B.) all lived in New Zealand until at least 1927-28. [Henry C. STEEL married 1928 in Sydney. This is Henry Charles STEEL of 40 Excelsior Street, Sydney - as shown on NSW electoral rolls and as informant to death of his father, John STEEL in July, 1928].
I think it is highly unlikely that John Bernard STEEL and his father, John STEEL, have a connection to the "Jack (John) James STEEL" you are seeking.
