1851 Kilsyth Census
I am looking for the birth place  "Malliows, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire" of my 2nd Great G'mother.
Any help appreciated. Mr Google isn't working for this one.

Have you accessed her birth record in the Old Parish Registers yet? Sometimes that gives a clue as to where a place may have been.
Where did the family stay in 1861?

Hi,
I looked up "old place names for Kilsyth". I came up with MAILINGS,but it is a payfor view site.
If you look up Mailings Road,Banton,Kilsyth,it will probably close to the location you are looking for.

Good Luck

Andrew

If you go to the National Library of Scotland maps website, you will get free access to old maps of the area. Click on "Series maps" and select the earliest Ordnance Survey 6 inches to a mile map.

I looked through the 1851 census on FreeCEN. Mallions is listed in the same enumeration district as Banton, Engine and other places around Maillings so it does look likely to be the right place.

Just to throw a spanner in the works is it possible that Marriows is a family name as a few are jumping out at me from google?
Perhaps they worked and resided there.

The 1841 census transcription at www.freecen.org.uk lists it as Mullans and the 1851 says Village of Mallions.

The places in the enumeration district in 1851 are Glenhead, Craigdouffie, Slacks, Drumnessie, Berryhill, Crossmyloof, Bentend, Waterside, Slachristock, Slafarqhuar, Spittal, Burnhouse, Brockieside, Riskend, Auchinvalley, Auchinrivoch,  Village of Banton, Village of Engine, Village of Mallions, Village of Auchinvalley and Valleybank House. Look at the old map I gave you the link to. You can just about follow the route the enumerator walked from one place to another, assuming that the place marked Low Banton is the Village of Auchinvalley (there being nowhere esle big enough in the enumeration district).

Can you still doubt that the place you have transcribed as Malliows is the one that FreeCen has as Mullans in 1841 and Mallions in 1851 is the place marked Maillings on the map?
