Welcome to rootschat, cabell.

Which censuses have you found Thomas (1850/51) in, and could you provide references to them?

Thank-you

I think that Thomas, 1871, has his birthplace as 'Sanbach' in 1901, and 'Cidgrove, Tunstall' in 1911.

Cabell do you know the story of the two lovers she from the Slater boat family & he from the Nixon boat family ?? Both familys had a long term hatred for each  other the two meet in secret & then ran away together when the familys discovered their meetings so as to stay in with both sides the surname Slater Nixon was born . a lot of my later Nixons have the middle name of Slater .

Thomas Palin b.1851 is on the 1861 census. It is transcribed wrong. I found him by looking for his brother William Palin b.1853 at Little Leigh, Cheshire. The address is Canal Cottage, Acton Bridge, Little Leigh, Cheshire. He is not there at all and his elder brothers have their names joined together Joseph James. His father Thomas is a labourer on the land born 1820 at Kinderton Cheshire  but his birth is 1818 on the family tree. His wife Margrat is born in 1826 at Lostock Gralam.  Joseph b.1847, James b.1849, Thomas b.1851 are born Newton Cheshire. William b.1853, Mary b.1855, John b.1857, Elizabeth b.1858, Samuel b.1860 are born at Little Leigh, Cheshire. The census for 1871 has his father Thomas at Finneys Lane, Newton, Northwich, Cheshire. Thomas Palin b.1821, Margarett b.1828, Samual b.1860 and Henry b.1868.  The census for 1881 has his father Thomas at Shurlach, Northwich, Cheshire and he is a labourer on the canal. Thomas Palin is born in 1821, Margaret b.1830, Henry b.1868 and Margaret b.1873. I can find no record of Thomas and Hannah on the canals on the 1871 or 1881 census. The family tree is on palinfamily.tribalpages.com and it looks as if it could be the right one. The marriage certificate has Thomas Palins father as a labourer Thomas Palin. He also signs his own name so I do not think he came from a boating family. Chris.

Jane,
Did not know this story. Its quite romantic. It is Benjamin Slater Nixon on the marriage certificate so we must be from this family and it goes back to a William Nixon and Sophia Slater.

Chempat,
Thomas Palin b.1871. The places would be Sandbach, Cheshire and Kidsgrove or Tunstall, Staffordshire. Thomas Palin had no children of his own and the family says he looked after a cousins child and kept it. In 1911 at Stone, Staffordshire there is several of the boating family, Thomas Palin b.abt.1871, Joseph Palin b.1877 Tunstall, Wolstanton, Staffordshire and John Palin b.1879 on a boat on the canal, Cockleshell Row, Tunstall. Joseph Palin m. Georgina Elizabeth Dawson 3rd Sept. 1902 at Alrewas, Staffordshire. Also there are James, Ann, Elisabeth and Phoebe Cresswell.

Chempat,
Thomas Palin b.1850/51. In 1901 Thomas Palins brothers Joseph and John are on the boats at Barnton, Cheshire. John Palins mate is Herbert Wood b.1881 Tunstall. Joseph Palins mate is Saml Palin b.1858 Marston, Cheshire. Is this the Samuel Palin b.1860 Little Leigh, Cheshre on the palinfamily tree? Also James Atkins is at Newton, Cheshire in 1871. There are three brothers missing on the family tree Thomas Palin 1851, William Palin b.1853 and Samuel Palin b.1860.

Chempat,
The last one was about Thomas Palin b. abt. 1871 and his two brothers Joseph and John in 1901. A sister is at Alrewas in 1901. Phoebe m. Arthur Johnson. She is on her own with two children. She is down as Cober A. Johnson b.1875 Sandbach, Cheshire. Her children are Harry and Pheobe. I think she could be Seria or Sarah A. There is also a Mary Ann who marries a Joseph Hollinshead.

yes it is on his certificate also his father was called Eli Slater Nixon .This story was told to me many times as a child by my Grandad I come from 8 generations of working boat family's on Grandad's side & 4 on my Nanny's side none of them could read or write so the normal childhood reading of bedtime fairy tales was not possible instead I was told stories of their life & customs ect
50 odd years later all these tales & memories are written down this is my heritage to pass on to my Grandchildren & the canal world some day  as a matter of interest Joe Hollingshead is also in my family tree.

Jane,
Thanks for the family tree. I'm pleased you have recorded these stories & customs as it is all being lost. My Uncle Dan Withers from Tipton has his canal boat 'The Ferret' in the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. He did the ropework on the boat.
I had heard we are related to Ronnie Wood and I watched a programme about Ronnie Wood.

jane,
I have not been able to find Jane Creswells mother Ann Matilda Guest. She is on the census as being born at Manchester and Macclesfield, Cheshire. Isabelle Cresswell was christened at Ellesmere Port. She married at St. Pauls Tipton 21st May 1877 to James Cresswell. Her father is John Guest a boatman. Also John Cresswell married Ann Taylor on the same day. The family though that Ann Matilda Cresswell was a Smallwood. My Uncle Dan Withers mother was Mary Smith and she was friends with Ann Matilda Cresswell.

Hi Jane,
The family tree on palinfamily.tribalpages.com seems to be the right one. Thomas Palin b.1818 Kinderton, Cheshire m. Margaret Wood. Two of their sons became boatmen. 1. Thomas Palin b.1851 Newton Heath, Cheshire m. Hannah Wood at Tunstall, Staffs. He dies in 1882 at Stafford. 2. William Palin b.1853 Little Leigh, Cheshire is on the 1911 census at The Canal, Etruria Lock, Hanley, Staffs. His wife is Mary b. abt. 1851 Clay Hill, Shropshire and there is a niece Mary Turner b. abt.1887 Walsall, Staffs. Also on the boats at The Canal, Etruria are Frank & Beny Goode. Jane Nixon's sister Florence Cresswell m. Benjamin Goode 25th Dec 1913 at Weston- on-Trent, Stafford. A possible link to you is John & Sarah Palin. Sarah Ann's father is Thomas Harrison & first husband is John Lowe. There are several surnames I recognize.
Many thanks for the Nixon family tree which made it a lot clearer. Jane Nixon's parents were James Cresswell b.17th Jan 1854 Little Lane, Wolverhampton and Ann Matilda Guest b.1857. James Cresswell's parents were John Cresswell & Jane Horton m.3rd Oct 1847 St Matthews, Walsall, Staffs. John Cresswell's parents maybe William & Mary Cresswell. John Cresswell christened 16th May 1824 St Matthews, Walsall all boatmen.

Hi Jane,
I missed the year off the David Wood & Ellen Slater Nixon marriage it was 19th Oct 1891.
Jane Creswell's mother Ann Matilda Guest seems to be just Matilda Guest. I think I have found her on a census in 1871. She is at 6 Canal Side, Park Lane, East Canal Side, Tipton, Dudley, Staffordshire.
James Dollar widower, boatman b.1816 at Tipton, Staffordshire.
Hannah Guest housekeeper widow, boatwoman b.1835 at Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire.
Isabella Guest daughter b.1856 at London, Middlesex.
Matilda Guest daughter b. 1858 at Manchester, Lancashire.
John Guest son b.1860 at Staffordshire.
There is also a family of Thompsons.
I mixed up the generations and it was Isabella Palin not her mother Matilda Cresswell/Guest who was friends with Mary Smith.
Matilda Cresswell died on her 83rd birthday in 1940 at Wolverhampton and is buried at St Andrews, Weston, Stafford.
I think this is as far as I will be able to trace. I hope your stories and customs are published someday.
Chris
