Hi,
Am looking for assistance tracking the parish birth record of a Robert Selwood born in Southrop about 1831. He may have a brother named Thomas. Hoping to get info on who his parents were and maybe some help taking this back a generation.
Any and all information gratefully received.
Thankyou

There is a tree on A*****y I haven't checked sources - it gives
Robert Selwood as the son of Thomas Selwood b.1796 d.1831
and Hannah b.1803 d.1872
married 1821 tetbury Glos
Hannah then remarried 1831 to Robert Dowdeswell
no maiden name given for Hannah
sometimes Hannah's are entered as "Ann"
so could this be Robert Selwood's mother in 1851?
1851Tetbury Gloucester
Robert Dowdeswell Head M 44 Tetbury
Ann wife 53 Malmesbury Wilts
Harry Sellwood step son 23 Tetbury
Robert Dowdeswell son 15
Jacob Dowdeswell son 12

Hi
Does Robert marry Ann Jones ? His father on the cert. is called William Sellwood.
On the 1841 census, there is a family in Southrop transcribed SELLARDS on Anc*, looks like Sellards too, but could be the family

This does look like it could be the family! It is interesting then that he would adopt Selwood if his brother maintained the name Sellard. Was that common?
I do have Robert marrying an Ann Jones but didn't have his father's name on the index. Where could I track down the certificate?
I went down the road of Robert Dowdeswell before but found what appears to be a record of him dying young.
Thanks for helping me work through this everyone!

Hi
The marriage record is on Anc*, here are the details
At the parish Church at Eastleach Turville
30 May 1857 after Banns
Robert SELLWOOD full age bachelor labourer of Eastleach Turville. Father: William Sellwood~ labourer
Ann Jones full age spinster of Eastleach Turville. Father: Thomas Jones~ labourer
Both signed register with X
Witnesses: Enos SELLARDS and Mary Woodwards (X)
Not sure if that baptism is correct, mothers name in the census is Elizabeth, baptism it's ANN ???

Hi
Just checked the marriage record again, although he names himself Robert SELLWOOD his brother ENOS SELLARDS is one of the witnesses.
Robert SELLARD was bapt. 5 Sept. 1830 Southrop, son of William and Ann, father a labourer.
For those who tracked down a baptism, could it be there is a Sellard(s) family and a Selwood family?
claire
Just trying to put this all together then...
The likely family in 1841 is Sellards (William and Elizabeth and children). Robert married Ann Jones and gave his name as Selwood yet his brother Enos was Sellards. Robert Sellard was baptized in 1830 as son of William and Ann (not Elizabeth?)
-
I went back to the Thomas Selwood that I thought may have been a brother. He showed up in 1841 and 1851 records as being born in Southrop. That would mean that he was using the same name as Robert but that it wouldn't coincide with the Sellards family in 1841. I think we're back to Selwood, Sellwood rather than Sellards.

Hi
Father William was married twice
1) 15 Oct 1824 Southrop ~ William SELLARD to Anne HAYNES
2) 28 Jan 1836 " ~ " " widower to Elizabeth HOPE
On the marriage records, the family were unable to write, (therefore leaving their mark X) which could account for spelling variations in the name, for example ~
Enos SELLARD was actually baptized as AMOS !!
-
Thank you Claire. That does make this a more likely scenario I think. The suspected brother Thomas does have the same birth year as the Sellard's Thomas so it is fitting together.
Given your collective experience, are you pretty happy with this match?
Again, thanks for all your help!

Hi
I am a bit more convinced seeing the marriage record. If there were two families ~ Sellwoods and Sellards it would have been a bit of a coincidence that Enos Sellard would attend Robert Sellwoods marriage :)
Plus all the ages seem to match up etc.

Again, thanks to all who chimed in.
If anyone would like to continue on this chase, I see an Anc* tree where someone has taken this back a few generations in Berkshire. Robert's father William appears to be one of about 10 children born in Southrop to a Louis Saillard (of Berkshire) and a Dinah Smith (of Southrop) during the period 1794-1814. Lots of different spellings for the children too. I'd love to adopt this research but without access to these parish records I am hesitant to do so.
