Title: Richard Moore, Supervisor of Excise, Belfast 1840s and 50s
Post by: GeorgiyH on Friday 14 August 15 12:23 BST (UK)
Hello,
I am trying to find out more about Richard Moore, Supervisor of Excise, a son of my 4th great grandfather. Richard was the son of Capt John Moore RN who was Harbour Master in Galway and died in 1849. Richard married Sarah Amelia Rawlins on 10 Oct 1843. Going by Irish newspapers and the 1861 English census, their children were Margaret Ann born Feb 29 1844 in Swansea Wales, John born July 18 1845 in Belfast, Mary born Feb 19 1847 in Belfast, Sarah born 1850 in Ireland (Belfast?) and Alice born 1853 in Lambeth, England. The 1861 census has Richard's wife and children in Lambeth, but I can find no other traces of them anywhere. Any help in finding out more about this branch of my family would be most welcome and appreciated (I am not even sure what a Supervisor of Excise did - is it something to do with Customs or taxation?)
Thanks in advance.

According to the births you've listed Richard Moore should have been in Belfast approx. 1844/45-1850/53 but I don't see his name in 1852 Belfast directory-
www.lennonwylie.co.uk/1852names3.htm

I did find this in the Belfast Newsletter (23 Feb.1847) but unfortunately just says 'Belfast' rather than street address-
BIRTHS On the 10th inst., at Belfast, the lady of Richard John Moore, Esq., Supervisor of Excise, of a daughter.

Thanks for that - I may have misread the 10th as the 19th in the case of Mary Moore's birth.
Anyway from what you found I guess it is safe to say that by 1851 they may have gone to England.

Yes, full name was in birth announcement I posted earlier.

Have you tried checking for him in Lambeth directories to see if you can narrow down date he might have left Ireland?

Just remember that directories usually compiled and printed before the year date- thus, 1850 directory could have been put together and printed in 1849.

Richard married Sarah on 10 May 1843.

The children included a son Richard John Moore, baptised in Belfast in 1846.

Yes, you are right, the marriage was in May. Do you know which parish Richard John was born in? This child may have died as he is not in the 1861 census.

St. Anne's Church of Ireland.

Is there a chance that John was Richard John?

Maybe, the 1845 newspaper did not mention a name, just that a son was born.

Do you mean the birth announcement I posted earlier? If so, it was for a daughter born in 1847.

No, Gaffy was talking about a different child. There seems to be two sons John in 1845 and Richard John in 1846. Richard John does not appear in the English census, so maybe he died.

I know that gaffy was talking about a different child but what newspaper announcement are you referring to?

I'm a bit puzzled because I had originally checked for birth in Newsletter and now just looked again in 1845 and can't see one. So, was it in a different newspaper?

Yes, page 2 of the Southern Reporter and Cork Commercial Courier 26 July 1845. "On the 18th inst at his residence, Belfast, the lady of Richard J Moore Esq, Supervisor of Excise, of a son."

I can see an announcement in the Cork Examiner announcing a son at Belfast on 18 July 1845 to the lady of Richard J. Moore, Supervisor of Excise.

Edited to add: Same notice in a Galway newspaper.

hi my name is amanda sweeney (nee wright).  their daughter Sarah Amelia Moore was my 2 x great grandmother.  her son horace james ellis born birmingham my great grandfather, his son leonard frederick ellis my grandfather.
richard john moore was my 3 x great grandfather and is buried in the cemetery next to where i lived for over 30 years (only found this out recently).
Sarah who married alfred pond (i think ran off with my 2 x great grandfather Joseph William Donaldson and they added the surname Ellis.  i can find no record of a marriage for them).  he was from london and was a painter and decorator , on the 1881 census for birmingham there is a sarah amelia ellis with a joseph willliam donaldson ellis, their son joseph william donaldson and her daughter from her marriage to alfred.  i am hoping some dna from the  donaldson side can prove this .

Thanks for writing. That will make us 5th cousins through our mutual 4th great-grandparents (Richard Moore's parents) Captain John Moore of the RN, in Galway.
