Title: seeking details w d Murphy
Post by: bmur on Friday 14 August 15 04:04 BST (UK)
:)this is one old man requesting details of an even older man my grandfather William desmond Murphy born 1860, as far as I can recollect in the town of Tipperary (his eldest brother's name was John) my grandfather came to SA during the anglo -boer war 1899-1902 as RMS 1st Irish brigade & remained until his death 1954.   (1) it is necessary to establish the details of his birth & place of birth
(certificate is required when applying for a passport) (2) to trace if there is a connection / relationship to the ancient Irish king Herremon.  Regards

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there won't be a birth certificate.

Was William Desmond Murphy Catholic? If so Tipperary Parish records have a register with baptisms 1849-1868 (lots of other registers also)-

Hi,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
I can t find a William DESMOND Murphy in army records, lots of W Murphys though. There is one born Tipperary, right age,  who was in the Boer War and possibly stayed on in S A, he had a wife who died after only 2 years of marriage and a Daughter Mary Ellen....ring any bells?

As I already explained, civil registration of births started in 1864 so there are no birth certificates before that date.

Unfortunately, if people send information by PM the rest of us don't know what's been found, etc.

Have you checked the Parish Registers I mentioned earlier? (although you haven't confirmed if William was Catholic)

If William Desmond Murphy wasn't Catholic then what religion would he have been? there's still a chance of finding his baptism although it may not be online

Good morning, still battling to find my grandfather's baptism records William Desmond Murphy born 9.10.1860 Co. Tipperary. His father's name Edmond, eldest brother John born 1856  My grandfather married Ellen Mc Grath @ St Marys, Clonmel 29.7.1900. Perhaps the records of the first census taken after 1860 would shed some light. Could you please advise what the date (year) of that census would be. Regards bmur.

Posted on behalf of bmur who had sent the message to me in error.

Regards

Sarah

wonder if it might be easier to try and get the baptism record for your grandmother Ellen McGrath.

A little more complicated, Ellen (is not my grandmother) she passed away after two years of marriage. Being a soldier William came to South Africa during the Anglo-Boer war1899-1902. After the war he remained in SA and remarried thus all the difficulties. What now ? Just have to keep digging.Regards bmur........ hey , thanks for the info so far

Hi Mr. Murphy, if you are still researching this information then I have a good amount of detail because I have been helping my cousin Liam Murphy in Ireland research the same family. Kevin.

Unfortunately I have just learned that Benjamin Murphy Senior (bmur) passed away 2 years ago. This investigation was restarted 5 years later in another thread in this forum and all questions have been answered. See url below for the link to that conversation. Kevin.
