Hello,
I am looking to find the parents of my great great grandfather Joseph Alexander Macmaster. He was born around 1835 (my calculation) in Cape Town, South Africa (I think).
Joseph's spouse was Isabella East - this could be her full name, but I can find no marriage documents yet.
He is recorded at the baptism of his daughter Emily Lonsdale Macmaster on 22 July 1863 at St. George's Cathedral, Grahamstown with his wife, Isabella East. Witnessing the baptism are William Lonsdale, Emily Mc Master and Louisa Mc Master.
He is listed as a merchant.
He is then recorded at the baptism of his second daughter, Agnes Mabel McMaster (b. 2 Oct 1865) on 15 Nov 1865 in Bangalore, India.
He is recorded again at the baptism of his third daughter Laura McMaster who was born, baptised and died on 31 July 1866.
Her mother, Isabella East McMaster died 3 days later on 3 Aug 1866, she was buried the next day in Bangalore, India.
I only discovered he was my gg grandfather when he was named in the divorce proceedings of my great great grandmother Katherine Louisa Osborn (nee Kensington) 1844-1922 and her husband William Lushington Osborn 1832-1912. It seems that Joseph and Katherine had an affair while in India, this continued in the Isle of Man, UK and my great grandmother, May Osborn was born in France in May 1878.
His daughters by Isabella moved to the UK, both married there, but both died without issue. Therefore I cannot find out anything through his legitimate descendants.
I have found a listing in The London Gazette of June 16, 1882 which says that: Pursuant to an Order of the High Court of Judicature at Madras, made on the 20th April 1882, in the matter of Joseph Alexander Mc Master, of Bangalore, Coffee Planter, a person of unsound mind, all person who are or who claim to be creditors of the said Joseph Alexander Mc Master, and persons claiming to be interested in his property, estate and effects are, in person, or by their attorneys, on or before the 1st day of August, 1882, to come in and prove their claims in Judges Chambers, in the said High Court of Judicature, at Madras, or in default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefit of the said Order. Tuesday, the 1st day of August, 1882, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, at the said chambers, is appointed for hearing and adjudicating upon the said claims - Dated this 3rd day of May, 1882. Barclay and Morgan, Attorneys for the Committees
I cannot find the court documents yet, nor have I found any record of his death.
I would be fascinated to hear from anyone who may know anything about Joseph Alexander Mc Master or his family.
Thank you, Fleur

Hi i have found a tree on Ancestry
Birth: Abt. 1835 - South Africa
Death: May 1886 - Florence, Firenze, Toscana, Italy
Spouse: Isabella East Lonsdale
it has this bit of info on the search page could this be yours?
-
There is a document re Joseph Alexander's death in ancestry's UK, Foreign and Overseas Registers of British Subjects, 1627-1969 but you will need a translator :)
It is dated 26 Maggio 1886. Maggio is Italian for May.
Then there is a transcript only of an entry for a J A McMaster in the India, Select Deaths and Burials just giving the name and initials, spouse Isabel East McMaster

Hello, thank you for the excellent speedy responses, the ancestry UK tree is mine, and I put in information that I hope might throw up some more. For example, I gave Isabella the Lonsdale surname as one of the witnesses at the baptism of her daughter was William Lonsdale. I thought he could have been a father/brother. Sadly it didn't get me any further.
The death date referred to in the UK, Foreign and Overseas Registers of British Subjects 1627-1969 is for an Alexandro MacMaster (not Joseph Alexander) who was born in Belfast (I got my Italian neighbour to translate it for me). Again, I added it thinking it might link to something else, like a birth certificate in the Belfast registers, but with no luck, so it's probably not him.
So, still hoping there might be someone out there who will know something of my gg grandfather.
Thanks again for all your help.
Best wishes.

Hi
There is another family tree on Ancestry
Joseph Alexander McMaster born 25.4.1836 Grahamstown s of Joseph Mcmaster 1814-1890 and Sarah White 1814-24.11.1850 Grahamstown.
Siblings William R 1838-29.7.1840,Sarah Isabella born 1841,Laura Louisa 1843,Edward John Hooper 15.2.1845,Elizabeth Kimber 19.1.1848,and Frances Hooper 1850.
The family are in Croydon on the 1861 census Joseph senior is a merchant from Gateshead age 46 ,second wife Eliza Jane 33 from Middlesex.
It gives a death for Joseph in India 15.5.1882 but that looks a bit doubtful, perhaps some confusion with the record you found.
Joseph senior's Will of 1890 might shed some light on it.
Sister Sarah Isabella Susan marries a William Lonsdale at St Pancras 12.9.1862 a coffee planter of Hilldrop House s of William army officer.witnesses Charles Henry Lonsdale and Laura Louisa McMaster.

Bonjour,
May serait décédée le 11 août 1945 à Hampstead (Middlesex, England).

Please can you translate to English I have used google translate myself
Hello,
I'm interested in May Osborn because she married Adolphe Henri Edouard Fortin, who is a relative of mine. She was 17 and he was 19.
They married on February 5, 1896, in Samer, France. They had two children:
Léa Aimée Julie Fortin, born in Samer on April 22, 1896
Adolphe Edouard Félicien Fortin, born in Samer on June 9, 1897
They divorced on April 20, 1901.
"The judgment rendered at the Civil Court of Boulogne-sur-Mer in its public hearing on January 18 (...) grants the divorce in favor of the wife and against the husband. (...) prohibits the husband from visiting or frequenting his wife in the future for any reason and under any pretext whatsoever, subject to immediate expulsion by all legal means."
May had custody of the two children: Léa, 5, and Adolphe, 4. I have no further information about the children.
May is believed to have died on August 11, 1945, in Hampstead (Middlesex, England).
Adolphe FORTIN (father) remarried 11 years later, still in Samer, on December 2, 1912, to Osithe Marie Joséphine BALLY, widow of Louis PRUVOST.
Adolphe and Osithe had three children: Odette in 1913, Edouard in 1915, and Eugène in 1917.
Adolphe FORTIN died in Samer in 1934.
I see that there is some doubt about the paternity of William Osborn, who is declared her father and gave his consent at May's marriage. May is believed to be the daughter of Joseph Alexander McMaster.
This is the information I can give you. French documents are easily available online. I can help you obtain them if you wish.
Have a nice day.
I hope you read this message one day.
