Title: Ellen Brady crossed from Canada to US in 1928
Post by: nfmcc on Monday 10 August 15 13:44 BST (UK)
Hello.  I have traced my aunt, Ellen Brady, to a border crossing at St. Albans/Vermont in Feb. 1928.  She was from Ballyconnell Ireland, born in 1907, and emigrated to Montreal Canada in May 1927.  The destination, when she crossed to the US was Valhalla, New York to join a friend, Margaret Maguire. Her occupation was listed as "domestic".   The crossing document appears to list a Head Tax??? series DAH 39364.  Can I assume that once she was in the US she probably got a social security number?  If so, how would I find that out, and would I be able to trace her tracks through that?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi,

Quite possibly Ellen married once in the USA, if you had an exact date of birth, that would help the search ?

Social Security History -

http://www.ssa.gov/history/ssa/CandlerFactSheet.htm

Valhalla is a hamlet and census-designated place that is located within the town of Mount Pleasant, New York, in Westchester County.

The Westchester Archives do not seem to show a marriage for Ellen Brady after 1930

Wow, that was fast - August 10, 1907 is the date I have for her birth and her parents were John Brady and Maggie Brady (Reilly).  You're right, she likely married, which makes the search much more difficult.  Thanks.

The SSDI (Social Security Death Index) isn't showing any "Ellen" under that birth date.  Can see some 10 August 1907 deaths but under Helen. The social security index was up and running by about 1962.
These would need checked out - just in case the spelling of Ellen varied.

The website doesn't seem to be working now, but you might want to check for her the Westchester Co. naturalizations - http://archives.westchestergov.com/browse-all-online-indexes-main

I would suggest looking for her in the 1930 or 1940 census.  If she had any other relatives for which you could find an obituary, that might indicate where she lived or if she married.

Not everyone had a Social Security number, people who died before the early 1960's wouldn't appear on the Social Security death index, and she may not have even stayed in the US, so that line of inquiry might unfortunately be a dead end.
