My Husband has distant relatives who lived in the village of Froyle. I think the local newspaper was the Hampshire Herald and would like to know if there were any obituries published in the paper after their deaths. There are some Hampshire newspapers on Find My Past but the Hampshire Herald isn't one of them

Try the Reading Mercury, a lot of my family who lived very close to Froyle, in Odiham, Alton and the surrounding areas had obituaries and BMDs, in the Reading Mercury. Don't get fixated on local papers, even the smallest things were noted far and wide.

Thankyou Jebber, I have just searched the Reading Mecury and whilst their are articles about Upper Froyle there is no mention of the family I am looking for and as for many years they were Post Master and Post mistress of Froyle Post office and also Thomas Robinson being appointed Parish Clerk I would have expected there would have been a mention of them.

Depending on the time period concerned you are more like to find Froyle news in the Farnham Herald or Surrey and Hants News.
Have you visited www.froyle.com

Yes I have visited the website and got lots of information about the Robinson family from there, unfortunately neither the Farnham Herald or Surrey and Hants News has been uploaded to the Newspaper index on FindMyPast

The Hampshire Herald became the Alton Gazette and it is on film at Alton Library.
Have you not tried the Froyle village web site which has information on the Robinson family (if these are who you are trying to research) including notes from a family ledger, photo of Gerald (sadly his grandson died in 2013), memorial inscriptions, etc.
Never forget the village/town web sites or any local museums or local history societies. Many villages now have their own archives.

If you have a particular query - the Booths who run the Froyle web site might help - or I could go to Alton Library for you - but I would need a date. Finding a mention depends on if the village had a local reporter for the paper at that period but you might be lucky.

Hi Jane,
I have looked at the Froyle website and got information from there, but I am curious to know whether any members of the Robinson family had an obituary printed in the local paper, I would be extremely grateful if you could look for Thomas Robinson died 2nd March 1926, Harriet Robinson died 20th December 1908 and Richard Gerald Robinson who died 24th April 1929.
Thankyou
Joan

I will try and get to the Library next week. The usual was a description of a funeral and mainly for men. Yours Jane

Many thanks Jane, its frustrating living so far away from the resources that you want to search, I do have a subscription to Find My Past but unfortunately the newspapers that probably contain information about Froyle and its inhabitants hasn't been uploaded to the Newspaper Library.

I have just managed to get to Alton Library and there are not obits for two of your people but there is a longish one for:-
Alton Gazette, 3rd May 1929.
‘DEATH OF MR. R.G. ROBINSON. - Almost in the same hour as Mr Stent, whose death is reported above, passed away, the death occurred of his nephew, Mr Richard Gerald Robinson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs Gerald Robinson, of Turnpike Cottages, Froyle. He was 25 years of age, and had been ill for a considerable time. After serving five years in the R.A.F., he returned from service in February 1927 and took his discharge in the same year. He was taken seriously ill in 1927 and went to the Mount Sanatorium, Bishopstoke, for three months. For the past 10 months he had been in the sanatorium at Ventnor. The deceased was a godson of Sir Hubert Miller, Bart., his father having been in the employ of Sir Hubert as a gardener for many years. The funeral took place in St Mary’s Church on Saturday. The body was taken into the church on Friday evening, when Vespers were sung, and on Saturday morning there was a Sung Requiem Mass which was attended by the adult members of the choir, the church being nearly full. At 2.30 the burial service was sung by the same choir, the 90th Psalm and the hymn, “Jesu, lover of my soul” being sung, and as the procession left the church the Benedictus was chanted. Both services were taken by the Rev C. H. Sangster. The Lesson at the burial service was read by Sir Hubert Miller, Bart. Dr Pechell presided at the organ. The chief mourners were: Mr and Mrs Robinson (parents), Miss Molly Robinson (sister), C.P.O. and Mrs Simms, Mr and Mrs E. King, Mr and Mrs F. Robinson, Mrs Terry, and Mr J. Izzard (uncles and aunts), and Mrs Brownjohn.’
There then followed a long list of those who had sent floral tributes which included:-
Mum, Dad, Molly and Reg; Auntie Dora and Uncle Frank; Staff of Newport-road School, Aldershot; Auntie Kit and Uncle Edmond; Uncle Dick and Aunt Ada; Charlie and Harold; His chum Jim; Grannie and Auntie; and ‘His godfather, Sir Hubert Miller’.

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to go and look for the information I wanted, I had wondered what had happened to Richard Gerald Robinson, I knew he had been in the RAF and spent some time in India so I wondered whether he had contracted an illness when he was out there, it must have been especially sad for his parents as they had lost a child at the age of 2 when her pushchair was blown in front of a lorry.
Once again thankyou for taking the time to look for me! :)

You are very welcome. Yours Jane
