Title: Hampshire & Isle of Wight Directories
Post by: Piltdown_man on Monday 27 July 15 14:53 BST (UK)
I am in the process of finding the names of those that ran the Hare and Hounds inn at Downend, Arreton on the Isle of Wight from 1815 to date

I have used censuses, parish records, licensing books, the local newspaper archive, electoral registers and Hampshire and Isle of Wight directories and have compiled a lsit of names from 1815 to 1891 but Iam trying to fill in the following gaps:

1876 - 1891 James Cousins ran it but I cannot find any record confirming if he ran it up until 1894.
In 1894 I have Henry Golding running it but cannot confirm if he only ran it for a year because in 1895 a James Butchers was running it; possibly until 1898 when Frank Newberry took over until 1899. From 1900 until late 1990s I am OK.

Arreton was split between North and South Arreton in 1894 with Downend and the Hare and Hounds coming under Whippingham. If anyone has any Hampshire/Isle of Wight directories for the years 1891-1893 and 1896-1897 it would be very helpful.

I hadn't seen it but I have those names. I have actually completed the list today. 200 years of those running it 1815-2015.

I was unable to find all the directories I needed but using an old Isle of Wight newspaper (The Isle of Wight Observer) I was able to fill the gaps from the information I found between 1892 and 1900.

Using the electoral registers I was able to find the more recemt ones 2005 to date (and some assistance from a facebook group which I belong for some others before 2005).

I will passing this over to the current "manager" (can't call them landlords/ladies now I expect) and passing a copy to my local Record Office who have also helped me find the relevant information.
