Hi there!
Lucilla Herbert Mullins (Millins) married William Nelson of Norwich who is one of my fathers direct descendants.
I know that her father was Gregory Millins (Mullins) and that her mother was Mary Elizabeth Marshall - does anyone have any further information about her? This is as far as I can get in my research on our family tree.

Thank you!
We have found this link - but it's as far as we can get unfortunately.
Lucilla is also listed as the mother of Albert Edward Garrett who was married to Amelia Garrett (my Dads Grandparents. We can't quite fathom out how is name is Garrett when she married William Nelson. She is listed as Alberts mother in the 1911 England census and was living with them in Norwich alongside a Charles Nelson.
Does anyone have any answers to this?

She is listed as Alberts mother in the 1911 England census
That is incorrect. Lucilla and son Charles Nelson are at 17 Little Ball Close. Albert Garrett and family are at number 18. They are quite separate households, on different census pages.

That makes sense, however we do think that one of the women on a photo that we have of lucilla is my great aunt hilda.

Found a few snippets. Gregory Mullins was a corporal in 1st Battalion of 21st Foot and was stationed in Barbados in the early 1860's. He was an orderly room clerk.

There are army birth registrations under Mullens:
1861 Lucilla H - 3rd - Barbados 776 26
1863 Gregory CW - 3rd - Barbados 776 26
The references to 3rd Regiment are puzzling as he is recorded in 1st Batt of 21st Regiment in April 1861. Newspapers confirm that 1/21st was in Barbados at the time that the two children were born, while 3rd Regiment was in India.

Hi Liffyb,
My partner is a direct descendant of William Nelson, and I found Lucilla working in a pub in the 1881 census where she was listed as Servant, or could this be 'barmaid' age 19, and a birthplace as NK (meaning Not Known), India.
This was the 'Cow & Hare' in Heigham St, Norwich. My guess was she met William as a customer in the pub. They married in 1884 and gave her occupation as a Silk Winder, and her father as Charles Mullins (deceased). My next guess is she was illiterate (as most were at that time), and couldn't read what was being entered in any case, even if she knew the difference between the West Indies & India.
She and William had 5 children, one of which was my partners grandfather. Other branches of the family still live in the Norwich area. Also of interest is that his father was lilled in an explosion in a Norwich street in 1876, and a distant member of the family sent me a copy of the newspaper report.

Death of William Woolerstone in Norwich, 2Q 1884, aged 44
Per his army papers William Walter Woolerstone was born in East Dereham, Norfolk circa 1837.

This is possibly the burial of brother Gregory at the catholic church in Meerut: Gregory Mullins died and buried on October 5th 1867 age 4. Child of Private Mullins, 1/3 Buffs.
The Buffs were the 3rd Regiment of Foot is that ties in with the army birth record.

Thanks for all that hard work ShaunJ,
I wouldn't have known where to start. I had some vague idea of checking if there were census' on Barbados, and if so when & who could I find, but you've covered most of the unanswered questions, and I never thought that the family may end up in India, so once again thanks.

I think there will be more to be found from the muster rolls of the 21st and 3rd regiments which may reveal Gregory Mullins' place of birth ( I suspect it was Ireland) amongst other things.
