Hello
is there any way of finding out what was at 16 Mortimer Square in the early 1900s without having to census trawl with no names?
An ancestor of mine was there, quite well off, when he died just before WW1 and its possibly a nursing home but would like to find out a bit more, such as who owned it, if it was called anything particular?
Thanks
Ruth

What civil parish does Mortimer Square come under?
Added:
OK, found it as W11 4BY

I always just google the address I want to find out about! Had some good finds that way. And Google images and maps can provide you with a look around!
Some street names may have had a slight change, ie Rd for St. Etc

Mortimer Square on current google view looks of the correct age, but only a few houses left (8 or so?), so the rest demolished? When I initially searched for Mortimer Square I got Mortimer Street on auto-correct.
However, the only address on 1911 of Mortimer Square that I could find was a mis-reading of Mortimer Street.
As the ancestor died just before WW1 at Mortimer Square, then it should be there in 1911, unless built in 5 years (not impossible)

Was your ancestor there in on the 1901 or 1911 census?
Was it his address on his death certificate?
Apparently Mortimer Square was in Notting Hill W11 [1997]
Lots of changes in London - due to bomb damage and the 1960s, lots of renaming for some unknown reason, so it may no longer exist.

On Pat's NLS map, it looks like Mortimer Square may be an extension of Kenilworth St on the western side of St Ann's Rd. Lots of changes in the area between then and now.
Just having another look and see that Pat has located the correct place. They look like quite modest dwellings - it is possible that it was the house of a child or friend rather than his own home.

What is now Mortimer Square in Notting Hill was Mortimer Road until circa 1938. The 1938 PO Directory (page 100f) lists Mortimer Road as a street which "it is proposed to re-name shortly": new name Mortimer Square.
I can't find a record of a Mortimer Square in London in any census or any directory before 1938.

I found Olaf Street in 1901
Then lists Evesham Mews
Evesham Street
Mortimer Road
and then about 80 "Artisan Dwellings, Olaf Street"
Olaf Street starts at RG13 / 43 / 142 Pg 53

As Ruth has said that an ancestor was living at 16 Mortimer Square in the early 1900's, then surely that means that the address '16 Mortimer Square' was associated with her ancestor at that time.
I agree that the Mortimer Square that I found could easily have been called something else, so we await Ruth's return for further information.
Montimer Road is in Kensal Green on that map:

and is still there now.

The Mortimer Road that was renamed Mortimer Square in 1938 was in Notting Hill.
-
Ruth - is the address taken from a death certificate? If so where was the death registered?
Might the residence be Mortimer St?
-
A 1908 map but not detailed enough to be marked:

Is it worth looking at the residents of Mortimer Street in the 1901/1911 censuses as well?
If the address is from a death certificate, who was the informant?
-
I think it would be best to wait for confirmation of the district before continuing
-
Agreed. :)

Hi
Mortimer Square is situated in notting dale , it is directly opposite Henry Dickens Court w11...
-
It's not the one in Notting Hill - as has been stated, that was Mortimer Road before 1938.
A number of us responded to this query but Ruth never came back with more information or an acknowledgement.
