Title: Rebecca Ann Saunders
Post by: ladyynara on Monday 20 July 15 20:34 BST (UK)
Trying to find my great grandmothers birth record to find out what her mother's maiden name was.  I have virtually every record under the sun for her, including baptism, and they are all from Southwark, but the only birth record I can find from the correct year (1896) seems to be from Mile End.  Her parents were a Henry (Harry) John Saunders and Mary ?.  He was a cook in hotels and rumour has it, the Guildhall in London at some point.   I've found a few possible marriage records for Henry, but none with a Mary so far.   Rebecca married a George William Cox.   Not sure whether to order the birth record on the off chance it's her, or whether I'm just not looking correctly.

Ok, I found that on FreeBMD but when I look at the actual scan I don't see a "female" listed.  Isn't that usually for stillborns anyway?

No, as far as I know stillborns are not on that register, they have a separate register.

On her baptismal record the date of birth is given as Nov 10 1896 so (if accurate) too late for a birth registered Sept qtr.

I wonder if it woud be a good idea to get one of her sisters' certs and work from there?

Hmm, that might be a good idea.

I wonder if she wasn't registered? If you look at the 1911 census it is well and truely mucked up with things filled in the wrong place and written incorrectly, it doesn't look as if they were very good with forms!   ;D

They seem to be fond of the name Margaret as it was 3 of the daughters' second name.

Do you know if Mary Ann is Harry's daughter, or could she be Mary's?

According to the 1911 they only have 3 children still living, but they have four daughters with them.

I know!  That 1911 census made me laugh.  I have to wonder if Mary wasn't quite all together when filling that out because she made a right pigs ear out of it.
The daughters middle names weren't all Margaret, I think she just got happy with the ditto mark.

I'm still trying to figure that out.  Mary Ann was born a good few years before they were married and I did find a couple of possible other marriages for Henry, but with a common name it's hard to work out if it's actually him or not.  Mary Ann is not on the 1901 census with them.  I was hoping finding out Mary's maiden name might help.

They seem to be in Southwark in 1891-transcribed as LAUNDERS on A*try. Look for Ernest LAUNDERS born 1887 Kennington.

Sorry if you have that already!

I think I see what record you mean, but nothing really matches up with that.  Not convinced it's them.  Thanks for looking though!  This family is turning out to be quite tricky.

Oh wait I was looking at a different one.  Hrrrm.  I've not heard of an Eliza or Ernest before, but some things do match up.  More investigation needed!
