Hi, I have several ancestors who appear to have worked in the mills in the Stroud Valley.
I am curious to know if perhaps the National Archives (or another org) might have records from those mills? E.g. employee records etc. Does anyone know whether that type of information might be held somewhere (if indeed it has survived)?
Thanks, Carol

The county archives might be able to help you:

Hi
It might be worth contacting these people.

I found this under the Education ---- Discover tab.
Victorian Families at the Mill – A resource CD of photographs, census and parish records. Can be reproduced for classroom use and comes with a booklet of notes and suggestions.

Excellent - thanks very much. I was just up in Stroud last week but didn't know where to start. This will be most helpful.

There was a book published in 1967 called "Gloucestershire Woollen Mills" by Jennifer Tann. It covers the whole of Gloucestershire - not just the Stroud valley. Though it gives some names, these are usually mill owners, and not mill workers. There are illustrations of some of the mills if you find out where your ancestors worked.
In your list of names of interest, I noticed Gould and Reece. I looked these up in the index, but there was no reference to either.
Under the heading of "Thrupp mill" - it says there was probably a fulling mill there from the 17th century. Run by members of Wathen family in latter part of 18th century. Later leased to John Ferrabee in 1828. The mill has since been demolished.
It also appears that few records have been found for this site.

Hi Ruth, thanks so much for that excellent information! I will certainly do some follow up on that to see if I can open up any new avenues to explore about their lives. Thanks again!
