Could anyone please tell me when maiden names first appeared on death certs ? I don't suppose it was far back as 1868 ! ? I'm attempting to find the maiden name of 3 x great grandmother , her last child was born 1833( so no help there ) and she died in 1868, with her husband Thomas Jones and children on census, Familysearch site has loads of Thomas Jones/Jane marriages , for Shropshire area , Jane was born Westbury Shropshire according to census in 1791,
Thanks in advance

certainly not as far back as that!
Think there was a re-design of the certificate about 1968 -- so maiden name was probably added then

Maiden names appeared from 1 April 1969.
Have you found the children's baptisms, sometimes they have maiden names?

Thanks to you both

Not as yet groom , childrens names were Jane, Edward, William, John and Maria , , those names coupled with Jones is a bit of a nightmare !! added to he fact that lived on the English /Welsh border but will keep trying !

Hi Jan57 ... A long shot, but first born sons were often named after the mothers father, so its possible Janes father was called Edward. Ok you still don't know the maiden name, but as you look through births and marriages, it might give you some to concentrate on, and eliminate, first.
Also if you do come across any baptism records for the children, a maiden name is sometimes incorporated into a childs name. I once found an ancestor that way, so something to bear in mind :)

Thanks Kilkennylass, its actually for that ' middle name/ mothers maiden name theory ' we ( Mum and I) are looking into , as Mums uncle was given a middle name , but no one knows why that name ! he wasn't baptised , so nothing to do with godparents .

Hi Jan,
Often a middle name is from a grandmother's maiden name although not always but it seems to keep the female line going if you see what I mean ::)

It was Poulter , the uncle who was given it was the great grandson of the Jane in question , no one else in the family had a middle name like that , We suspect that it's a maiden name of someone , would be nice to be able to clarify the suspicions !!
