I’m very disappointed that the Clontarf records are not among the microfilms released by the NLI. I’ve been told however that there is a transcription of Clontarf’s registers but I’ve yet to find any reference to such document.
Is there any way of checking pre-1800 records for that parish? RC mainly but I’d also like to check the COI records just in case.
Very grateful for any pointers!

I presume you mean Parish Records?
Civil Registration, and Birth Marriage & Death records, came to Ireland much later.
The National Library says:
An index to baptisms and marriages from 1771 is available at Roots Ireland. In 1879 Clontarf, Killester, Coolock, Raheny separated from Fairview, Artane, Glasnevin and Santry to form the parishes of Clontarf and Fairview respectively.
So, presumably before 1879 you need to look at Fairview?

Yes, I mean church records. I know civil registration didn’t come in until 1864 or thereabouts. I’ve been to all the genealogy sites, free and paying….I just want to check for myself, awkward cuss that I am.
Not yet prepared to admit defeat, even though my head is raw and bleeding from hitting the brick wall. 8)

You don't seem to have followed through the links about Clontarf records on NLI page for further information. One of the links takes you to this (http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&parish=Artane,%20Clontarf,%20Coolock,%20Santry,%20Dublin%20city&churchid=0504) page

Thanks, I'll have another go :)

Having lived in Clontarf for years, frequented Harry Byrne's pub etc... can't thing of anywhere where mining was carried out around there, the nearest I can think of is some small mines on Howth Head that I heard existed in times past.

It was my cousin who told me Clontarf wasn’t in the NLI release :-[. I didn’t check then, but I have now. I have been to Roots many times over the years and have picked up several records, notably my Downes gg-grandparents’ marriage in 1817 (Booterstown) and the birth of most of their children in Clontarf.
I note that the Irish Times lists a ‘Database printout’ at the NAI Is this something one can obtain, or is a physical visit to the archives necessary?

The Downes on Howth Road near Harry Byrnes????

I don't know the north side of Dublin, let alone Clontarf. :o My parents (from Ballsbridge & Stillorgan) kidnapped me as a baby and removed me to foreign parts. I now live in even foreigner parts, so I have to keep referring to maps or relying on cousins to put me right....
The gg-grandparents lived until at least 1840 in or around Clontarf where 6 of the 7 children were born (Seafield Avenue and Black Quarry in 2 cases, the rest just 'Clontarf'. One son died young and his address is Killester according to the Glasnevin records.
I'll be posting separately about the 'Misses Downes' who owned property in the area and whom I want to eliminate.
