Title: Laurance/Laurence/Lawrence Gillan
Post by: Zebrakat on Thursday 09 July 15 15:51 BST (UK)
My brickwall:- I cant seem to move beyond Laurance

Laurance Gillon/Gillan/Gillen

He was born(abt !810) in Ireland I believe, married a Margaret Glaucie/Glaucy, They had a few children, one being John born 1830's he married a Jane Thomson in Ayr 1863. I can't find any records of Gillan's in Ireland yet the 1851 Census in Scotland says Ireland as place of birth. Its driving me nuts as I can't seem to move forward. Help

Thank you in advance

To find Irish ancestors pre-civil registration you need to have a location (parish if not actual townland not just the county) so that you can see what church records still survive.

The link posted above is for the Catholic Parish registers (put online yesterday) but not all areas will have records far enough for your family and you need to search by parish (not surname) so a location is key.

Yep....a location would make my life easier for the Gillan's Family tree but it will help me with the McCarthy's and Clifford family trees

Margaret's Surname Glaucy strikes as unusual and it may be worthwhile keeping the name Glancy in mind.  Easy to mistake U and N in handwritten name.

Hello,

1841 has this family in Rutherglen. All are born in Ireland.

Lawrence Gillen   30 yrs
Mrs Margret Gillen 28 yrs
John Gillen    9 yrs
Peter Gillen 5 yrs
Cathrine Gillen 3 yrs
Margret Gillen 1 yr

I was hoping that there may be baptisms which could help but as as been said you need more information.
Tithe Applotment  indexes http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp show a Larence Gillin in Aghnamullen Parish, Monaghan. This is in 1829 so maybe your Laurence would be too young then.
Unfortunately, the records on the new site for Aughnamullen East and Aughnamullen West, one of which would be the Catholic parish, I think, do not have records as early as you need for a check.

Monaghan looks the best, but just in case
In Belfast street directories, there are Gillan from at least 1824, and every 10 or 20 years
In Belfast 1861 street directory http://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/alphanames1861g2L.htm
Glancy, E., carver and gilder, 31 Rosemary Street.

In Co Down  there are less than 20 Gillan entries see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies/

Hi, i was wondering how you got along with searching the family. I am trying to find out information on 3x great grandmother Margaret Gillan/Toppin http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=754418.0

I dont know if she is the girl in the 1841 & 1851 census with your family.

Any information you could shed on her and the family would be great as im really confused at the moment.

Thanks
