Title: Margaret Stitt
Post by: SSlh on Thursday 09 July 15 08:09 BST (UK)
Any information on Margaret Stitt, who was married to William Stitt, an architect , or their children, would be very greatly appreciated.
After William's death, it  is believed Margaret married the Rev James Gibson ( of Lislooney Presbyterian Church) in Maguiresbridge Presbyterian Church in December 1849.
Many thanks for any help given.

According to this extracted marriage record Margaret's father was Hugh Gallagher- the marriage certificate will show more detail:

There's details about the works of William Stitt, Irish architect, here:
http://www.dia.ie/architects/view/5165/stitt-william
He was alive in 1832 but may not be the one who married Margaret Gallagher.

James Gibson (licensed Monaghan Presbytery) ordained Lislooney Presbyterian Church 5 Aug.1801 and retired due to ill-health in 1834.

another posting that has the same info

noting that the rootsweb piece states that Rev. Gibson was in his 70s is interesting when the transcription of the marriage states he was 22 as was Margaret STITT; both being widowed

The architect William STITT was active in the early 1800s with addresses for different reasons throughout the 1810s, 1820s and 1830s in Dublin.

Thank for that information.
It has been a surprise to the family to find that he married Margaret Stitt  in his mid 70's! But a researcher in Ireland send me a copy of the newspaper announcing the marriage and the details given were exact e.g. that he was"  the Rev James Gibson, Minister of Lislooney Presbyterian Church".
Another mystery to me is that he wrote a very long detailed letter about the family to his granddaughter in 1856 mentioning his first wife only fleetingly by name and nothing at all about his second wife Margaret Stitt whom he married 6 years before writing it.

I would check the original of the marriage record on line from 1849 as it states both parties were aged 22! Not in their 70s.  It could well be that they were 72 and it was mis-transcribed but it could also be a different couple!

Also William STITT the architect died approx 1833
His will is recorded in that year reference I22 showing his address as 11 Lwr Abbey Street which matches records from other sources

Marriage

I am sure the 22 must be a mistake as I feel this has to be my 3x great grandfather. He even gives the name of his father as Alexander, which we knew.

Looking for any information on a Richard Stitt and his family who were living in Church Street Holywood, County Down in 1877. His mother Margaret Gibson , nee Stitt died there on the 30th November 1877. Trying to trace the family after this date.
Many thanks!

You've a separate thread here now (may be more information on that thread but I haven't read all through it)-
Margaret Stitt (nee Galagher) married my 3x great grandfather the Rev James Gibson on the 25th December 1849. He was minister of Lislooney Presbyterian Church between 1801 and 1834 when he retired through ill health.

After his first wife Jane Gibson (nee Wright) died he remarried a Margaret Stitt relic of William Stitt, a well known Dublin architect in 1849.

Margaret Gibson died on the 30 Nov 1877 at her home in Church Street, Holywood, Down, Northern Ireland. She had children with her first husband, and seemed to have daughters who died unmarried. But I know she also had two sons, one I think was named William Stitt. I am searching for any information on family that Margaret had as they may know where Margaret's husband , my 3x great grandfather the Rev James Gibson is buried.
