Title: Jones - getting no where fast!
Post by: lisalucie on Wednesday 08 July 15 11:40 BST (UK)
Any help from you rootschatters would be fantastic as Ive hit a brick wall.

Right my 3x great grandad was Thomas Benjamin Dawson Jones b.1858 in Wolverhampton, father unknown (However I suspect he was Mr.Dawson). Now its Thomas' maternal family that I want to trace. I do not have his birth certificate yet so I'm unsure which girl in the following family was his Mom but thats ok for now I really just want to find the family prior to 1861.

1861 sees the family on the Bilston Road, Wolverhampton - Head, Martha Jones aged 62 b.Donnington Shropshire (shes a widow), Children, Martha Jones aged32 b.Newtown Montgomeryshire, Thomas aged 27 b. Newtown also, Ann aged 22 b.Minsterley Shropshire, John aged 19 and Mary aged 16 also born Minsterley, and then my Thomas Jones aged 3 and his small sister aged 3m.

I think I have them in 1871 and I have my Thomas all through in the censuses. Im assuming that Martha Jones (the daughter) was Thomas' Mom but as I said I cant proove that yet BUT I really want to find the family in 1851 and 1841 and some parish register entries would be fab!!!

Thanks in advance, Lisa

Hi
Could this be them in 1851 at Pontesbury?
Workhouse bank
Thomas Jones 46 lead miner Montgomery Llandewel
Martha 45 Salop Condover
Martha 21 dressmaker Newtown Mont.
Thomas 17 coal miner Newtown
Amelia 13 Westbury Salop
Ann 12
John 9?
Mary 6
lodger John Halfon /Healford ag lab 26 Chirbury Shrops.

There's a baptism for Martha Jones d of Thomas and Martha at Newtown 15.6.1828.

Possible other children but it's a common name at Newtown-
Thomas 30.1.1820, Mary Ann 24.6.1821,Martha 8.12.1822,John 24.4.1825.
Emma at Westbury 8.4.1836.

1841 has them in Minsterley parish Westbury
Thomas Jones 30 lead miner n
Martha 30 y
Martha 12 n
Thomas 7n
Emma 4 y
Ann 2 y
John  1mth y

It does seem to fit the birthplace of the children.

You're welcome :)

You will probably need a child's birth certificate for Martha's maiden name to find the right marriage - it would be SO easy to go wrong with Jones.

Here's one for the shoebox in the meantime:

17 Dec 1827, St Tyssil, Llandyssil, Montgomeryshire

Thomas JONES bach otp to Martha ROBERTS spinster otp

I agree I definately need to get a birth cert to be sure! I reckon that on the 51 census when Thomas senoir gives his place of birth it reads as Llandyssil instead of Llandewel...?? Which would fit with the marriage to Martha (but Im not getting too carried away yet lol).

Do u know whether these Welsh towns are near to the places they were living/children born in Shropshire...Im trying to route plan it lol and they do look near x

Yes I had it as Llandussel in 1851 but close enough.  That's why I thought that particular marriage might be relevant.

It's not my area but from online maps the places linked with the couple do appear to be close to the Welsh/English (Shropshire) border on either side.  Perhaps someone will come along with more local knowledge.

Hi Lisa
Llandysil is a small village approx 3-4 miles from Newtown.
Westbury/Minsterley/Pontsbury are all within a close proximity to each other and I would estimate maybe 15-20 miles from Llandysil.
You're very much in "my area" now as I was reared near Welshpool.
Hope this bit of local knowledge helps
Ann :-D

Thanks you Ann that's fab...I was route planning it but getting slightly confused lol. All very near to each other then, I'd assume as Thomas was a lead miner that they moved with the work x
