"On the Federal Census she was listed as an inmate"
- which census? An 'inmate' of what institution?
Censuses make it look like she was married to William before 1913 (although perhaps it was a late marriage - do you have the paperwork?). I don't see any that list her parents as Irish (his were).

On the 1900 US census for Rochester New York there is a 23 year old Mary C. Martin born Sept 1876 shown as an inmate - she was a nurse working at St. Mary's Hospital. This record shows an immigration year of 1894 - she had been in the U.S. 6 years as noted in the next column. She is born Canada and parents born Canada.

Your reference to "North Ontario" is interesting. Where did that come from?
A Mary C. Martin appears in Mara Township in Ontario County, Ontario in the 1881 Census. At that time, the northern townships of Ontario County were known as North Ontario in the census records. The 1910 US records indicate she is Irish and the family in the 1881 Canadian census are also Irish, with the mother, Elizabeth, aged 42, being born in Ireland. There is no husband noted, and children aged 19 down to 3, with Mary C., being the second youngest, aged 5. They are Methodists which suggests the family were from Ulster.

The Mary Charlotte Martin referred to as living in Mara township Ontario County in 1881 died in Ontario in 1935, unmarried. Parents were James Martin and Elizabeth Fair.

This couple does not appear to be on the Ontario Co. NY marriage index - http://www.co.ontario.ny.us/index.aspx?nid=607 The dates for that begin in 1908, so they may have married before that. A marriage certificate may give her parents' names.
I found an obituary for Mrs. Mary C. Lancer, widow of William, in the Lima, NY Recorder from 20 May 1954 on www.fultonhistory.com. The obit is transcribed here - http://www.newyorkroots.org/ontario/Newsitems/newstown/newswestbloom1900.htm

The 1905 New York state census has Mary C. Martin in Rochester, New York listed as a boarder. She was 25, born in Canada and a nurse (I can't tell what kind of nurse because it's too blurry). Catherine Martin is listed in the same household, She was 20, born in Canada and a personal nurse. The census indicates Mary had been in the US for 11 years and Catherine for 2. Here's a link to the image (lines 9 and 10 on right hand page):

Do you know what the C. stands for in her name? In the 1891 census for Hastings County, Ontario there is a William Martin with wife Margaret who have a 14 year old Mary and a 6 year old Catherine in the household. William Martin, s/o John Martin and Marcella Murphy married Margaret Campbell, d/o Patrick Campbell and Johanna Shea 10 Aug 1875 at Kingston, Ontario. The family was Roman Catholic. Interesting if Mary's middle name was Campbell.

I saw that family too. Her birth registration gives her name as Mary Marcella Martin so unless she changed her name it would appear this is not her.

Too bad. It sounded good on paper.
