Where is Whittington/Whittington Moor
, but with no offence to the inhabitants - old, new, or moor - past or present, I was rather hoping it wasn't in Derbyshire!

What started as a minor headache, just became much bigger.

I have 2 young ladies both with the surname POCOCK. Ann Elizabeth Pocock born 1879 Swadlincote, (aka Annie Eliza) and Eliza Annie Pocock born 1879 Whittington.  Registration district for both - Chesterfield, but only 1 registration exists, Dec.Q 1879 7b 650.

I know Ann Elizabeth was illegitimate. Up to 1911 the Census'  list her birth at Swadlincote, when it suddenly changes to Shalbourne [Berks or Wilts reg. district -Hungerford], but I can find no record to tie in. [The family had moved from Shalbourne to Church Gresley/Swadlincote, but still had relatives in the Shalbourne area, so I appreciate it would be feasible for her to return there and then back to Derbyshire].

The thing I find odd is that the family of Eliza Ann Pocock, b. Whittington, were born and resided in London, and she appears to be the only member born outside, in Derbyshire.

Other than obtaining a copy of the certificate for the Chesterfield reg. is their any way I would be able to find which parents were on it?

I have tried Parish registers, for christenings etc, but they don't appear to list either family.

Any suggestions?

corndolly

No - birth cert info cannot be looked up by members of the public

I know Ann Elizabeth was illegitimate.

1881 has an A Elizabeth Pocock aged 1 b Swadlincote living with Pocock grandparents Thomas & Sarah Pocock.  Swadlincote came under Burton on Trent Reg district but nothing on freebmd.  This couple also have a 1yr old daughter Emily whose birth is on freebmd

1881 Annie Pocock aged 1 b Whittington (RD = Chesterfield) youngest of 3 children of Thomas & Sarah Pocock so I would guess that the Dec 1879 birth reg is hers

Hi corndolly,

From FreeBMD:
Births Jun 1876, Pocock Annie Elizabeth, Newbury 2c 238.

Until 1895 a part of Shalbourne parish was in Berkshire, then transferred to Wiltshire. (but you knew that already, didn't you?)

Cheers

There is a Whittington, Staffordshire (close to Lichfield) which sometimes shows people in Burton on Trent. Haven't checked this out but you may find it ineresting. Brit

Ref Louisa's birthplace on 1891 Census

It is Rivar (which is near Shalbourne)

Thank you all very much for your replies and info.  Sorry its taken so long to reply, got a little sidetracked with a query on my other halfs family tree.

They certainly got around more back then than I ever gave them credit for!

Will go and quietly digest all you have sent me; I'm sure my answer is there.

thanks again

[Pedant alert]

The registration district for a birth in Swadlincote in 1879 would be Burton-upon-Trent, not Chesterfield.

[Pedant alert off]

If you know that the one b.1879 was illegitimate, would she necessarily have Pocock as a surname, or might she be listed under a different surname?

Sorry about the delay, computer went 'kaput', just sneaking some time on my other halfs'.

Reason I'm pretty sure she was illegitimate - 1881 census she is listed with her grandparents under the name Pocock.  On a later census she is living with her newly married mother, but is listed as a visitor.  Grandparents didn't have any other children of age to have had her.

When I looked up the registration district, pretty sure I saw Chesterfield for both. It probably changed and I missed the date of change.  Sorry about that.

Once again thankyou all for your help

If you are referring to the 1891 census - have you read my earlier replies?  In 1891 she is shown under her mothers married name of Miller and shown as daughter
