I am trying to trace the marriage record of Isaac Sallis and Mary Ann Wyatt. Their first child, Joseph, was born in Marlborough in 1827 but I can't find a marriage record. Their second child, Ellen, was born there in 1834. I am also trying to find out what happened in the intervening period - I have found a reference to an Isaac Sallis 'detained upon orders' in Devizes Jail in 1830. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might find out more about why Isaac had been 'detained' at this time?

The 1851 for Surrey shows children born in Wiltshire up to 1844

Isaac Sallis was imprisoned for 4 mths in 1830 in Wiltshire for larceny

1, Phillimore covers Marlborough up to 1812
2. WFHS covers Marlborough but it costs.
3. White Horse can do a look up for you but again it costs.
4. Have a look on Wiltshire OPC for surrounding places contigious to Marlborough.
5. The prison used mostly at that time was at Devizes. . . so have a look for his name in the Devizes Gazette which can be found on FindMyPast or British Newspaper Archive as to his criminal record... or contact Swindon Archives or Marlborough has an office [ I believe]
6. there are microfilms for the parish of Marlborough....>

Thank you so much for all this useful information. I will followup the leads given - and yes, he did move to Surrey, in about 1845, and then to Greenwich.
