Harold Villiers Creasy Acheson was born abt. June 1914, Slough, Buckinghamshire, England son of Harold Chamney Acheson born 21 February 1890, Liverpool, England and Phyllis Uva Creasy born 14 July 1889, Badulla, Ceylon.
Harold the son was an expert on Geese Farming and has published many books and articles on the subject. He came to New Zealand at some time and died on 25 Oct 1972, Whangarei, and was cremated at Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland, 27 Oct 1972.
What I cannot find is if he had a wife he either accompanied to New Zealand or he married there. Or he never married?

Harold V. C. Acheson did leave a probated will (1972); a watchman of Whangarei. Document held at Archives, Auckland.

You may have some luck perhaps if you try posting to the Canada Board here ?

Hi barryd
* Did Harold have a brother ??

-
I do not think Harold Jnr, ever had a brother. His father was off to war and his mother died 12 November 1918. Influenza. The bells of peace were ringing in the churches and she was dying. He did however have a grand-uncle, Francis Rowland Creasy, born Wimbledon, Surrey, then Ceylon and then New Zealand - Nelson. I wonder if they ever knew that? Any help in any NZ source appreciated.
-
Hi .... yes I had just found the mother's death (1918) ... and the father's re-marriage (1919).
{Forget the "brother" question ... I was jumping to conclusions. ;D }
* Do you know if Harold was raised in UK ?
Reason for asking is I can see a Harold ACHESON - 13 years [bc 1913] travelling to Canada in 1926. ???

Hi
Francis Rowland CREASY ... probably the man who appears on NZ records as Frank Roland CREASY ?
You can view his probate file at the following link >

I had not seen the 1926 Manifest of people travelling to Canada. But yes that is him, Harold Acheson Jnr. travelling to Canada and his relative in Canada is Uncle [Frank] Burrard Creasy. FBC was born at Carlebeck Estate, Nanvoya, Ceylon, 19 March 1891. He had some association with England but was in Gibson, Gallup, New Mexico USA when his newly arrived soon to be wife Lilly Gough from England married in Gibson 30 April 1913. He was in New Mexico with his Cousins Giles and Robert Creasy Master. Giles and Robert were born in England but their two older sisters were born in Ceylon to Robert Pulvertoft Master and Amelia Creasy. I previously had not found a second marriage for Harold Acheson Snr. but Harold Jnr's relative in England on the Manifest is given as his half sister Patricia which seems a bit strange as she would be about 6 years old if she is from his father's second marriage. Its late Sunday night in Utah so got to hit the sack. I don't want to be left out so can announce that I was in Ceylon as a very young boy when the liner stopped there. A day trip!
-
Hi barryd
Can confirm that John Burrard ACHESON is indeed the son of Sue and Harold ACHESON.
Had found earlier, mother and son on a return voyage from London to Quebec, Canada in 1954 where the son's full name was given on the passenger manifest.

I am totally happy with all the information you all have given me. Sue Acheson formerly Bergersen was really Sue not Susan. Born Kent, England 1911. From no information to abundant information everything went well. Thank you.

Hi there Barry, I was doing a bit of on line research re Harold Chamney Acheson and this thread popped up.
FYI Harold remarried with a Dorothy Chernocke Downes in 1919 (after the death of his first wife and the death of her first husband) in St George Hanover Square London.
I am a descendant of the Downes line. If I can provide any further info, plse feel free to let me know.
Regards, Carol

Harold married again as you mention.
St. Saviours, Pimlico, London, England, 3 December 1919.
Parents of the Bride, Charles Villiers Somerville Downes and Catherine Ann Thompson.
The Bride was a Widow. There was an enormous amount of widows around in 1919.
Her first married name was Mrs. Christopher Hartley. That's all I know about her.
-
Christopher Hartley 1886-1917
I am a direct descendent of John Sheen Downes and his wife Ann Kinghorn of Jamaica (now there's an entertaining story!)
-
Dorothy's parents were:
Charles Villiers Somerville Downes LT Col B 1846 Aspley Guise (the family home/seat), Bedforshire D 1909 and
Catherine Elizabeth Anne Thomson B 1854-1938
There is a great deal online about the estate of Aspley Guise and the family generally. Charles and Catherine lost three sons 1) Edward in childhood 2) the other two Villiers and Archer both died in early in WWI and they both received medals - there is quite a bit online about those two)
-
I gather Catherine Downes, nee Thompson, wife of Villiers Somerville Downes, came from Urmston Lodge in Wimbledon Park. Her father Frederick was I think a banker who went bankrupt in 1883. Can anyone offer any more info or even a photo of Urmston Lodge please?
