Right, I'm off for a cup of English Breakfast and I bet this batch are all solved by the time I get back... ;D

I'm going to say school not house  :-\  (bravely, putting head about parapet!!)

Certainly looks like a public building to me.  (i.e. notice board outside).

A Private School perhaps Spidermonkey?

Not necessarily - it actually reminded me of the school I teach at which has the Victorian schoolmasters house incorporated into the rest of the school which has developed over the last 200 years or so.  (I hasten to add, that it isn't my school!!)

My first though was school as well. Is that a date on the wall between the two trees? I think if we could read the name on that notice board it might solve it.

This place reminds me of somewhere in Edinburgh, but I can't think where at the moment.

Considering where two other pictures have been identified as being located today - perhaps we should check out Hitchin......... ;)

My thoughts exactly Spidermonkey.  But I'm too exhausted with the excitement of actually finding the house on the hill that I'm off for a walk to calm down!

I don't think there are many stone buildings in Hitchin. I think it's much further north.

Old town hall with health centre attached?  I recall being taken 60 years ago, somewhere like that by my mum  to see the health visitors or child health nurses.

Note also the partly pol larded trees.

That's what I asked earlier on. Looks like 17??

Can we have a "zoom in"  on the notice board please?

IF  it is a house,  it is possibly a vicarage  or the manse,  or Priests lodgings.

The trees   have been pruned  or Pollarded,  is there any significance in that?

Six chimneys  indicates  it was built about 100 years ago  approximately.

I wondered about a public building of some kind (e.g. Council Offices or Health Centre - which ScouseBoy mentioned) as I can see curtains on the top floor windows but none on the other windows.  That might indicate a caretaker living above the premises???

Good point that,  and very true  for small Rural District Council  or Urban District councils, which were still in existence 42 years ago.

Equally, some schools had caretakers living on the premises.

Or could it be a Registry Office?   Very appropriate for Roots Chat.
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: ScouseBoy on Sunday 05 July 15 17:42 BST (UK)
The building in the background looks like a church.

Perhaps a good search term would  be  Church, Health Centre, Town hall  next to each other.

Yes.  The building in the middle  does remind me definitely of where I went in the early 1950s  for some NHS  services.    We may have got National Baby milk, and dental treatment?

Is the middle building  an early NHS facility?            Or WRVS   some Government  office quickly built after the war

Ostermilk, ScouseBoy??? And cod liver oil.  And small bottles of orange juice that had to be diluted?  Happy days.

Those were the days, my friend.

We thought they'd never end.

I can picture it very clearly in my minds eye.

The first time I had Laughing gas (as it was called)  to get a tooth out.

I can even still remember  the aroma of the government Issue polish.

Anyway, Maternity and Child welfare  services, which that was,  still came under the local authorities. That must have been why they tended to be built next to town halls, I guess.  I was born in 1949.

I suggest:    "Town Hall and Child clinic adjacent"   as a search term

Or New  Child Clinics built after WW2

I'm thinking old barracks with new barracks adjacent, building with flag post next to gatehouse.

I'd expect there to be more room for parades if it was a barracks.  :-\

OH looked at it and thought exactly the same as me - Edinburgh, even down to the same area of the city, but it hasn't actually got us any further.

Ah well.....

Nell

Added: And we both thought that the noticeboard at the front was more the sort of thing found in front of a church or church hall.

Caz, whilst this one is proving to be a problem, the solution is written in the picture. The triangular top (pediment) of the little notice board has the organisation who use the building, and maybe the town/city, written on it.
Probably six words.

A closer scan may provide you with the answer yourself, otherwise it may help us all to make a more informed guess as to what it says.

[Even 'barrel dormers' hasn't worked   ;D]
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: lizdb on Thursday 16 July 15 18:22 BST (UK)
Closer scan of that board would be great.

Im guessing it may say something district council, and if so, the something is a short word.

Seems to have a flag pole .  Id definitely guess it is some sort of council building of some sort.

The big mystery remains - where?

Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: Barbara.H on Thursday 16 July 15 20:00 BST (UK)
The words do look like three words round the top, two words in centre, one word at bottom.
Xxxx Xxxxxx Xxxxxx
Xxxx Xxxxxx
Xxxxxxxxx

Or the top row might be two words, one short & one long:
Xxxx Xxxxx[top of board]xxxxxxx

If the bottom line is a place name, it contains no letters with 'tails' e.g. p,q,g,y etc

Might be wishful thinking but I wonder if the middle row says High School. I think it looks like a Victorian school building that has had an annexe built possibly 1900-1930, linking it with another building. Maybe a junior and senior school merged into one?

 :) Barbara
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: roopat on Thursday 16 July 15 20:34 BST (UK)
I thought the building set back at the side looked like a junior school with separate entrances for boys and girls - I know you can only see one door but it looks odd offset to one side like that. So the more imposing building could well be the senior department.
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: Rhododendron on Thursday 16 July 15 21:10 BST (UK)
My guess is still that this is a Council building of some.sort.
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: ScouseBoy on Thursday 16 July 15 21:33 BST (UK)
The old building in the foreground is the Town Hall which has stood there for more than 60 years.

The newer building with the flag pole, I believe  is new build  between 1946 and 1952  to hose additional Welfare services  such as Health visitors  and  child and maternity services brought in about 1948.     Possibly the National Assistance Act of 1948.

So. My answer is Town Hall  and New  Maternity and childrens services building built circa 1948 or 1949.

Next to the New Health centre.

When I said 'where exactly', I meant in which town/city are the town hall and new health centre situated? Since you were so precise about their age and use I assumed you knew where they were  :D

A small town  or borough,  or an Urban District Council.  would have a Town Hall such as this.

The garden was well maintained.
Title: Re: Where Am I? No. 128 - House somewhere
Post by: Spidermonkey on Thursday 16 July 15 22:57 BST (UK)
But the long building to the left hand side looks just like a sports hall for a school - I really don't think it looks officey at all.

And to me, the 'old building in the foreground' looks nothing like a town hall, but like a school masters house that became part of a school - but that is probably because that is what my school looks like!

In that case I'm glad we finally flushed you out of the shadows.

There's a little chapel, a stone bridge and a thatched cottage still waiting to be identified - at least two of those could be on your doorstep!
