Hello,
I'm looking for the will of John Sykes, married to Frances/Fanny Sykes, who died in Higham Ferrers in 1796. Does anyone on here have access to it?
There is no record of John Sykes being baptised in Higham Ferrers so he must have been born elsewhere. I'm hoping his will could help me determine whether this John Sykes is the same John Sykes baptised in Biddenham (Bedfordshire) on 23 Jul 1744.
The Biddenham John Sykes had a number of brothers and sisters (Abraham, Isaac, Alice, Mary, Anna Maria, Sarah and possibly Elizabeth)
If someone could look up the will of Higham Ferrers John Sykes and see if there is any reference to siblings with those names, or any mention of the Biddenham/Ravensden/Stagsden/Bedford area, I would be very grateful!

Hi
Have you looked on the rushden research site there's seems to be a lot of references to the Sykes family ?

Hi Nadine,
Yeah I've had a look at the Rushden research website and it's given me loads of great info on the children John Sykes and his wife had during their time in Higham Ferrers. But before they started baptising children there, there is no record of either of them in the area (or any other Sykes' for that matter, apart from one Philip Sykes a few decades earlier who I don't think is related). So it seems they were born elsewhere. Since I believe John married his wife Fanny (nee Fisher) in 1773 in Bromham in Bedfordshire, I'd be interested to see whether there is a Bedfordshire connection with John Sykes too.
Hopefully John Sykes' will might have some insight into this! :)

Doesn't look like he left one I'm afraid. Checked the PCC Wills index on the National Archives website and wasn't one listed. Also checked the Northamptonshire & Rutland Wills Index and not one there either.

That's a shame. But thanks for looking that up for me :)

I can confirm that there's no record of a marriage between a John SYKES and Frances/Fanny in the Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837).
However, you may be interested in the following SYKES marriage records which all have a Northamptonshire/Bedfordshire connection:
22 DEC 1723 - Philip SYKES (of Nether Dean, Beds.) to Mary BAYES (otp) at Higham Ferrers CofE
24 AUG 1745 - Thomas SYKES (of Nether Dean) to Hannah LYNN (of Stanwick) at Wellingborough (by licence)
13 FEB 1783 - Thomas SYKES (of Dean, Beds., bachelor, of legal age) to Mary DRAGE (otp, widow, of legal age) at Hargrave CofE (by licence)
Have you fully researched the John SYKES of Biddenham? Only by tracing the birth of his children, his death and possible will, will you be able to eliminate him or claim him as "yours".

Hello Pennie ... take a look at ...
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=722106.0
... it has been researched....
Mary Bayes is 3rd wife of Philip Sykes, miller of Nether Dean who died in 1704
Thomas Sykes who married Hannah Lynn in 1745 baptised & buried daughter Ann at Dean in 1746. Hannah Sykes buried in 1747. Thomas was baptised 1716 son of Philip & Ann Sykes of Dean; this Philip 1677 is son of the above Philip Sykes, miller of Nether Dean
The last Thomas Sykes who married Mary Drage in 1783 is most likely the Thomas Sykes baptised Dean in 1754, son of the above Thomas & his next wife Sarah
Cheers John
