I bought a week subscription today and am not happy, as cannot find out how to find obituaries, the FAQ say that the text search does not cover them but they will be in the digital images.... but how do I find these digital images ???
It seems to be an Advanced Search page. and cannot get it give me the birth , death digital pages... I keep getting a message that 'no articles found ' if using that top search box at
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/thestar/advancedsearch.html
but can see no other way of searching... am frustrated.
RunKitty has found obits for me as I cannot locate them myself , even with the subscription....
What am I doing wrong? am I searching in the right place?
ThankYou
Heather

Hi Heather,
Runkitty is offline at the moment, but I've sent along a PM to her as I am certain she
will be able to help.
Cheers,

Hi,
Under Format, you can select "both" or "image only". The default is "both", so you can leave it like that if you wish.
The search term is the tricky part. If you click on "search tips" in the box at the top left of the screen, there are some helpful suggestions. Sometimes you have to get really creative!!
Then, in the "sort by" part, I usually select "oldest first". The default is "relevance". I am not sure how they decide that, but I would rather sort by date.

Thanks RK, still have problems... cannot recreate even using the same parameters..
seems the library edition and the paid site are different and not consistent, also every one in a while it kicks me off the site and have to login again.... sent a PM to RunKitty
I have tried to access the library edition but cannot from New Brunswick it appears.
Is the Toronto Telegram the same paper as the Toronto Star in the 1950's?
-
Not the same newspapers. I find if I'm looking for an obituary, I put the name in quotes, like "William Smith" and then add the word Deaths, as that is how the pages are headed in the Toronto Star. So, "William Smith" deaths will get you the results you're looking for. If not, try the name in reverse order, ie, "Smith William".

I sent an email complaint from the Archive site to ProQuest Archiver Customer Support and received these tips:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
· Have you cleared your cookies and temporary internet files? Then restart your browser before trying to access again.
· Are you using some type of personal firewall protection program? If so, you may need to disable it or enter pqarchiver.com as an accepted site.
· Is your browser security set too high? If so, you may need to lower it or add pqarchiver.com as an accepted site.
· Are you using one of the following as your browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5+, or Netscape 6.02+. They work best with the archives. Other browsers do not work well with the Archive sites at this time.
· Please be sure that you are using Adobe Reader 5.0 or higher.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The biggest issue with me I think was I as using Google Chrome for a browser, have switched to Internet Explorer for using these Archives searches and it made a big difference in the results I am getting. I also deleted my Temp Internet files which I had forgotten to do for a while... anyway I hope this helps someone else not experience frustration! I have suggested to their Customer Support that they put the Browser tip on the Search page please!!
Thanks for your help Ladies!
