I'd love to have an approximate date on this one, please  :)

Is she holding a book atop the pedestal?

Hi there.

According to this site, your photographer started business in 1894. Sadly, it doesnt state the duration of his business. But at least you know now, its from 1894 onwards.

Cheers.

Thank you for replying  :) but sadly that site is wrong - I have McAllan photos dating back to the 1860's :-\ and he is definitely on the 1871 1861 census as a photographer.

Do you know the earliest date he was on the census as a photographer? Any date from that point onwards lol.

Cheers.

Hi Jen...I believe Thomas Henry McAllan was at 23, Fore St. Hexam between 1860 and 1890.
I'll take a guess at late 1870s early 1880s.

Very good! perhaps that 1894 on the site I found, is when he finished business.

Carol's right, mid-late 1870's.
Notice the absence of the large bustle which dominated most of the decade.
By late decade younger women were favouring this smaller type.

Aha!!! I can't help with the date, BUT ... I am very familiar with this situation.

I am almost certain that the young lady is clutching the TV Remote Control so that her poor oppressed husband can't get his hands on it and switch the channel away from endless soapies.

Yep ... a very familiar situation indeed.

 ;D  ;D  ;D

Yes, quite likely. To preserve herself from endless football, most likely  ;D

I have seen this back before, Jen, do you have another one with the same back? Or maybe Carol? And yep, 1870s and I'd say more late than mid, but of course I would never argue with Jim  ;D

Cheers,
China

Hi China, I've got quite a few McAllan's with a similar back - all contain that fan design.

These two seem to have the same back as this one.
