Title: Lookup/Help on German Great Grandparents: Walter and Herta/Hertha Fehse.
Post by: Genegirl on Sunday 28 June 15 02:50 BST (UK)
Hello I'm really needing help on finding the background of my greatgrandparents.

I have posted here http://forum.ahnenforschung.net/showthread.php?t=121576 and they were able to pull up what I think is a record of my great grandfather in the First World War and that he lived in Leipzig. He and his wife came to New Zealand in 1951. That's all I know and their birth and death dates.
My grandmother was born in Leipzig as well.

I think a variant of their last name spelling may exist. Like Faehse etc.

However I want to know about my great grandfather's family and also for my great grandmother and her family and where she was born. Especially their parents names. I want to find that out very much! And all the areas of Germany.

My great grandfather Walter Fehse was born December 5 1896 or 1895. His gravestone says 1896 but I've seen 1895 elsewhere.  Died 1980. The birth date matches the war document.
My great grandmother Herta/Hertha?? Edith Fehse was born February 5 1898. Died 1972.
These are accurate. My mother is alive and she was witness to all of these.

My grandmother's maiden name I think is Cramer or Kraemer or something like that.

I'd be over the moon to find out about them. I never met them and have photos. But know nothing about them. I've tried some searches and can't find anything. It's hard to use because I don't understand German also.

I've been told some Russian ancestry may exist.

Could someone help me out?

Hi there,

From the New Zealand BDM online index :

Death Cert for Fritz Walter FEHSE, with dob 5 Dec 1895 #1980/37139
Death Cert for Edith Hertha FEHSE, with dob 5 Feb 1898  #1972/32110
Death Cert for Brigitta Maria RIFFERT, with dob 3 Feb 1927 #2011/20814

I understand that the information provided on a NZ BDM printout is more detailed than the information on the certificate, even though the printout is a cheaper option.  https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/dataCollected/

You should note that NZ BDM records can be very detailed, although like all dcs they are informant driven, so depending on the informant's own knowledge of the deceased, depends the accuracy of the information provided.  It simply gives you a starting point for new research.   So, on a NZ death registration you can expect to see headings giving you:
When and where died
Name and surname
Rank, profession, occupation
Sex and age
Cause of death, length of illness, Medico certifying cause and date last seen the deceased

Name and Surname of father, and his occupation,  Name and if known, maiden surname of mother,    ;D  ;D THIS WILL HELP YOU ADVANCE YOUR QUEST AS IT MAY WELL GIVE YOU THE NAMES OF YOUR GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS ;D  ;D

When and where buried/cremated
Where born, and how long in NZ
Where married, at what age, and to whom, and any children, if living issue, the number, age and sex
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/datacollected/death.aspx

Cheers,  JM

This is the sponsor that I mentioned....
So Ernest was at 14 Queen St, Pukakohe, New Zealand at the time he sponsored Walter and Herta's migration to NZ.

Might naturalization certificates provide further information?

Do you have the names of all of Walter and Herta's children to see which were born abroad?

(fabulous finds JM!  :))

Disappointed. The Liepzig board of council? Whatever it was I was instructed to email for information. They never got back to me! I guess they can't understand English. I don't know. It's been several days?

As far as the Archway records are concerned - you won't know how helpful they will be unless you order them for viewing, and read them.  Ordering instructions etc are on the site!  I'm not familiar with that procedure, so can't explain more about how, sorry.

You wrote a letter to an organisation in a language (English) different to their own (German) and complain they haven't replied after 'several days'  ::)

They may have a very small staff to deal with any such queries & some of them might not be in the office this time of year, the person who deals with queries in English may be busy, their files may be in storage or off-site... Any number of reasons why it's been 'several days.'

When doing any sort of research you need to be patient.

How do I know patience means they will reply?
I don't know how the system operates.
You can't blame me for not knowing how it works.
I was instructed to message them by people familiar with how it works. No one said it will take a long time.
Not a very courteous and respectable reply.

Wow Genegirl - how to rub people up the wrong way and ensure you receive no further help on rootschat!  :o

May I suggest that yours was not a very courteous and respectful reply to a perfectly reasonable, helpful and civil reply by aghadowey.  ::)

If your request to "Liepiz or wherever" was so rude and unreasonably demanding then it is no wonder they didn't reply.  ;D

Good luck with your research.

I think you are being entirely unfair both to Ruskie and I as well as other Rootschatters. We are certainly not trolls. If you look you will see that we both have a large number of posts (many of mine date back from when I was a global moderator here so well used to dealing with problem members) and we have both done an incredible amount of research, both personally and for many other members.

You don't know that the archives will reply but you will just have to wait and see.
You knew they were based in German and you knew that you wrote to then in English.
No one can say how long it will take to get a reply.

What I pointed out to you earlier was merely commonsense but if you expect instant results you are bound to be disappointed.

Using this  ::) emoticon was a rude gesture, so you can't blame me for feeling attacked. I'm a newbie here and to ancestry. Knowing you have been here a long time, you should be more aware that I'm new, and how rude it is to use such an expression. Commonly used by children.

I've been very grateful for every bit of help I've gotten.
FYI I was very courteous and polite to the council.

Great news, I found our Walter had a sister called Toni.
Presume her last name would've been Fehse as well. She lived in New York
Is anyone able to find anything?
Thank you so much :)
