Good morning,
I live in America and I am hoping that someone in England can help me with additional information regarding my friend's Great Great Grandfather, William Maynard.
William was born in 1829, Wivelsfield, a son of Thomas Maynard and Mary Burchell. Husband of Sarah Tubbs Dale. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1853. We can see that he was in Canada in the 1860s where three of their children were born, then the family is in Ros, Ireland where their fourth child is born. He was discharged from service due to ill health on April 19, 1870 and returned to England where three more children are born in Brighton, Sussex.
Can anyone give us insight on why he was stationed in Canada and Ireland at this time? Any other information on William Maynard would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Hope

Undoubtedly there are people on here who can answer your questions in detail, Generally though, in Canada, their guns were probably pointing towards you in the U.S. In Ireland, a home posting, all Ireland was in the UK then.

There's an FindMyPast military record for a Wm Maynard, that would appear to fit your" William - have you viewed this record?
In early December part of the Fourth Brigade Royal Artillery was put in readiness to embark for Canada -this as a result of the "Trent Affair" the previous month.
Check out the "Trent Affair" or "James Mason/John Slidell" for relations between Britain and the Northern States.
