Title: Alexander Norris birth look up

Hi ,Am hoping someone can help me ,my great great grandfather Alexander Norris ,we thought was born in Roslin Edinburgh ,but we can find no trace of a birth anywhere in Scotland ,I have seen an extract online of a birth in Blackburn around the correct date ,his mothers name was Eliza Timperley ,she came from the Blackburn area ,could anyone look up the birth to see if this is the correct one ,am hoping after many years of looking ,this will be correct ,many thanks in advance

Alexander Timperly ~ 1881 English census born 1863 Sanwade, Midlothian ( family living in Accrington, Lancs.) ~ Class: RG11; Piece: 4142; Folio: 88; Page: 13

FS baptisms of some of children list father as Thomas TIMPERLEY and mother as Elizabeth NORRIS.

This is bit of a complicated one for reasons I can't explain.

Thomas Timperley, 30, sawyer (son of John Timperley, mason, (dec'd) and Alice nee Riley) married Eliza Norris (parents unknown) 29/4/1870 Penicuik, Midlothian.

So, at marriage she is ELIZA Norris (and Elizabeth on census) - but I have found what I believe are the births of Peter (bc.1860) and Alexander (c.1863) although haven't found birth for James.

Both of these have been registered under Morris and not Norris.

Peter Morris b.9/4/1860 Lasswade, Midlothian, son of ELIZABETH MORRIS.

Alexander Morris b.1/10/1863 Roslin, Lasswade, Midlothian - illegitimate son of ELIZABETH MORRIS.  (Have viewed the birth certificate on SP and she was the informant - she has signed it and it is clearly Morris and not Norris!)

So, according to marriage certificate, she doesn't know who her parents are plus she doesn't seem to know if she is Eliza or Elizabeth and Morris or Norris!!

Daughter Elizabeth Alice Timperley born 29/6/1871 Glasgow, father Thomas Timperley, wood sawyer (journeyman) and Eliza Norris.   Mother Eliza Timperley was the informant.

I doublechecked on census and there were no Peter or Alexander's as Morris for the relevant dates so feel sure the 2 births shown above are the right ones.

What a saga!

In 1861 - as Eliza Norris - she is lodging in Colinton, Midlothian and with her is son Peter 1 but with surname Gairns (assuming this surname was that of natural father) - this time states that she and Peter was both born Penicuik?)

Thanks for all that information ,I had worked out most of what you had found ,however I had been looking up Norris and not Morris ,as far as I know their name was definitely Norris ,for years I have been trying to work this out ,and you have done it for me ,thanks so much ,one mystery was Peter Gairns ,no one seemed to know anything about him ,so that's something ill need to look into ,doesn't help as the family seemed to move up and down from Glasgow to Lancashire on a regular basis ,thanks again so much

Are you still looking for information on Alexander Norris  - mother Elizabeth Norris - step-father Thomas Timperley.  He married Mary Ellen Timperley (1837-1937) and they lived in Glasgow from their marriage in 1882 onwards. They had 12 children I believe.  My connection is through their daughter Isabella Clark Norris.  Happy to give you more information, however I appreciate that it's been a few months and you may have already discovered all  of this.

Hello, I realise a few years have passed since my original post , I have came back from the records office today still not solving the puzzle of Eliza Norris, i cant find a birth cert and on marriage cert her parents are stated as unknown ,i can only assume that maybe she was abandoned as a baby , but would this have been likely , any help would be appreciated , Thank you
