Title: Isaac Dawson, baptized 1813 Emley Church, but when did he die and where buried?
Post by: JoanieD on Saturday 06 June 15 13:43 BST (UK)
I am looking to find the year of death and possible burial place of my great great great grandfather, Isaac Dawson. He was baptized  in West Yorkshire on Dec 16, 1813 at Emley Church. His parents were John and Hannah and they lived in  Skelmanthorpe. He married Hannah Chappel in 1833. She died in 1853 and then he married Martha Dutton in 1859. I find him in the census reports up to the 1881 one, but nothing after that.

I found some information on a website that said an Isaac Dawson was buried in 1886 in the Tongue cemetery in Bolton. But I would have to pay to get more info. I already pay for ancestry.com and would prefer not to do that. I also found a list of names of people buried there which also says the list is not complete and it does not list Isaac Dawson. Do any of you know of any website which may show the year of birth of this Isaac Dawson who may be buried there? On the census reports, he gives ages that could make his year of birth as 1815, 1816 and 1817. But he was baptized in 1813, so I think he was quite “flexible” with his age!

Free BMD also shows an Isaac Dawson who died in June 1899 at age 88 which would mean he was born in 1811, though baptized in 1813. They show the district was Skirlaugh,

Isaac spent his life in Droylsden working as a baker and near the end of his life, he may have been a grocer.

I feel like I gathered quite a lot of info on this Isaac, including his children’s names, etc., but I would kind of like to wrap things up on him. Someone wrote on his son’s Benjamin’s Find A Grave that Isaac was born in 1814 and died in 1893, but they got that info from a book which I think was incorrect. There was an Isaac Dawson whose father was Robert who was born in 1814. I don’t know where they came up with the year 1893 for the death.

Ancestry/wills has one dying in 1883 in Yorkshire.
That one says parish of North Newbald and he left about £200.
That one had a son John.
That Isaac was a farmer and his wife had pre-deceased him.

Thanks, SmallTownGirl. I can scratch that one off!

And StanleysChesterton...I don't think Isaac was ever a farmer. Always a baker and grocer. Thanks for checking!

rosie99, I have not yet researched the where and when of the death of Isaac's second wife, Martha (Dutton) Dawson. She was born in Huddersfield, though.

Learning all these name of places in England and finding them on Google Earth and reading a bit of history on them makes me want to visit England. I likely have lots of relatives there that I know nothing about. Plus, when my mother visited Scotland and told a woman my father's father was a Dawson who came from England, the woman replied, "Well, if he was a Dawson, his family came from Scotland originally!"

Maybe the Isaac Dawson who died in June 1899 is my gr gr gr grandfather, but I don't have any document yet showing that. Thanks, all.

There is a possible death record for a Martha Dawson on the Cheshirebmd website.
Her age is out a bit but looking a the various census records her age does vary on each one so I do think it's worth keeping in mind

Martha Dawson 55 died 1885.
Death registered in Audenshaw..... which did cover the parish of Droylsden.

Most web searches I have just done are showing surname Dawson having English origin not Scottish  ;D

I use google earth lots on UK research, it certainly has helped with my geography.  I don't think that the skirlaugh death is yours I believe he is on census with a wife Ann in 1881 and 1891.

Thanks, rolnora for the info on Martha’s death.

And rosie99, I will spend some time checking out the genuki site. I only started researching my family’s roots less than a month ago. I am still leaning my way around ancestry.com  They give you so many hits it can be intimidating. Even with marking that you want some fields to be “exact” they give you many things that don’t pan out. I use famiilysearch.org sometimes and freeBMD although I know ancestry.com is pulling into from there. I have gotten some of the best info from you folks here on rootschat.com.  You are helpful and wonderful!

Heather…you crossed out the info on the Skirlaugh district death. Did you figure out that it cannot be my Isaac?

Rosie99, he was with wife Martha on the census of 1881. I do not find him in the 1891 census which is why I thought he must have died. He did live to a ripe old age! The Isaac you found in 1891 is not my Isaac. My Isaac was not a farmer and the children listed there are not his children and that is not his place of birth. The year of birth is correct, or at least 1811 is when my Isaac was baptized.

Well, I looked again at the Find A Grave website at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=60729494 which is the gravesite of Isaac's son, Benjamin, and Benjamin's family in New Bedford, Massachusetts. I note that they put the year of birth and year of death of Isaac on the stone along with all the other family members. Do you think that he could actually be buried there? I suppose Isaac could have come to live out the last of his years with his son Ben. Ben was in Massachusetts by 1868 so he was definitely there when his father was alive. We know his dad was in England in 1881 for the census but we don't know where he went from there. I guess I could check ships' manifests to find out if Isaac went to the USA. I had seen this site before and knew that had info about Isaac on the site, but I didn't realize his name is actually on the stone too. I suppose it could be just for informational purposes. What do you think? I know they put year of birth as 1814 and I have Isaac being baptized in 1811, but Isaac could have very well told Ben that 1814 was when he was born.

I DID find my gr gr gr grandfather Isaac Dawson came to the USA on November 7, 1887 on board the Etruria. His youngest daughter, Mary, had died at age 33 two months earlier and his second wife had died some years ago, so it looks like he and his son Benjamin decided he should go live with Benjamin and his family in New Bedford, Massachusetts. So, Isaac the baker (and then grocer) from Droylsden is buried only one state away from me! He lived until 1893 and I hope they were good years for him.

I crossed it out because it was in East Riding of Yorkshire and not near Huddersfield which was West Riding of Yorkshire and I realised that it was the one mentioned by Rosie99 .

Heatherjulie,  Glad your Yorkshire knowledge is better than mine I had not even looked where Skirlaugh was   ;D
