Title: 81st Regiment of Foot
Post by: rubeaz on Tuesday 02 June 15 01:47 BST (UK)
:) My 3rd great grandfather William Duke died 25 June 1849 at Belturbet Barracks Ireland. He was a Barrack Sergeant. I have this DC stating he was buried on 27 June 1849

I have obtained his army record  - but am unsure if it is him.  ::)

I have a Ancestry subscription and have looked at the Chelsea Pensioner document and note that on this record to the right of his name states died 25 June but can't quite decipher it.  ???
Is it possible for someone to check the Royal Chelsea to confirm  :)

Another public Ancestry member is also researching William Duke 81st Regiment of Foot and the Army records they have states 1877 but I think this was a verified document printed in 1877.

William Duke was a Sergeant Major 81st Regiment of Foot.

This may be confusing also. On the army service record I have his number is 199 but on the public Ancestry member it is 499  ::)

PS As you can probably tell I have noooooooo experience in military research !!!  ;D

Help much appreciated.

Cheers Kay (Australia)

I'm not sure exactly which records you are looking at but 199 Sergeant Major William Duke, 81st Regiment, was discharged from the army in 1842.

I can't see a document that states "died 25 June"  - can you post a link to it?

HI Kay

His record is on Findmypast rather than Ancestry. If you have found others, as already said, you need to post the links to the pages you have found.

:) So sorry Shaun and Ken - unable to  send link or attachment.  ???

This is where I found William Duke - towards the right of doc states died 25 June (although hard to read)  ::)

Ancestry UK Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Registers of Soldiers who served in Canada 1743-1882 (Image 31) Regimental Registers of Pensioners 80th-89th Regiments of Foot.

If you can explain how to add a link - I will try  :-[

Regards Kay

OK I see it.

Yes I would say that is very likely your man. Willm Duke admitted to pension 22/11/1842. Residence Cork. Died 25 June 1849 (it's in the 1849 column).

The pension date ties in with the record on FindMyPast for 199 William Duke.

Perhaps he was taken into the militia as a Sergeant after his discharge from the army - Ken knows more about that sort of thing than I do.

Hi Kay

The link is the web address, also known as the url - Uniform Resource Locator. It is the set of characters that appear in the box you use to enter www.rootschat.com etc.

As it is important that you get all the characters the safest way is to click anywhere inside the box, and press Ctrl A together. This highlights every character. Press Ctrl C (for copy). Go to your Rootschat reply and press Ctrl Y (for paste). Copy and paste can be done in a number ways, but I learnt the 'Ctrl' way first.

You need to ensure that you only put a space after the link. If you put another character, including a full stop, comma etc you are changing the address, and it will not be recognised.

The Barrack Department was a separate department that looked after the barracks. So different to the Regular army and the Militia. They employed Barrack Masters - who are listed in the annual army lists; Barrack Sergeants, who like William Duke were almost always Ex-NCOs discharged to pension. These are listed in entry books in the National Archives, which I will try and find later

They also had Barrack Labourers who only seem to be listed in census.

Hi Kay

There are two appointments books in Kew covering Barrack Sergeants with surname starting D:

WO 54/808   1835-1843
WO 54/816   1843-1855

The NA can provide you with a list of researchers.
