Hello quite some time ago I tried to get information on my son-in-laws family, the Buchanan's.
Well I am now hitting a brick wall.
I am trying to find William Findlison who married a lady named Janet (Sorry dont know anymore than that about the lady). They had a son named William Short Buchanan born in 1880, here in Matara New Zealand. Other children were to follow.
I am suspecting that William Findlison Buchanan came from Scotland and landed in Southland New Zealand, where other members of the family were born, including my son in laws father.
I have tried to find him in the census back in UK and on the passenger lists to NZ.
Thank you once again
Avril :) :)

I don't have a sub to Ancestry any more, but there are some trees there which have:
James Short Buchanan, born 1878 in Scotland
Father William Finlayson Buchanan; mother Janet
Died in Invercargill, NZ
For Scottish records you need to register, and get credits for, ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk.
(The records are almost certainly not available anywhere else! ::) )

One of the online trees lists a marriage of William Buchanan to Jane Short on 25 Dec 1877 at
Burnside Cottage Chapel, Lanark and also lists William's parents as James Buchanan and Catherine Finlayson which may explain William's middle name.
The good news about the Scotlands People records that KGarrad referred to is they usually include info on the family including the mother's maiden name on marriage certs :)

Hello
Thankyou so much Kay99 and KGArrad for your quick replies. You have shown me that the name Findlison should be Finlayson.. Now that is a great help
I will now try Scotlands people with the information that I have. Again many thanks :) :)

If you can access the family tree on Ancestry there are some brilliant photos of William F's father and siblings who also emigrated to NZ

Hello Kay
Thankyou again. I have recently let my Ancestry subs slip by. I will go to our local library who has this and many more sites on line. My grandaughter went to Otago museum last week and saw a replica of John Buchanan's home. That is what started all of this searching again. I had got so far back and got stuck. Many thanks again.
