Granny would like to know of Roberts parents. She believes his mothers name could be Clare and asks if Roberts parents were born in NSW

His sister is listed as next of kin in AIF rolls and her married name is Mrs A(lbert) Thompson of Hill End.

And given the short date between marriage and death was a child born in that time

I think this is going to be a complicated family.

Do you have any BDM certificates please?

NSW BDM marriage
19643/1937  GARNER Robert George m. AULD Muriel       Randwick  (22 Oct 1937)

death
23026/1937  GARNER Robert                                          Randwick   (27 Oct 1937)
parents George / Clara

My correction here........ to now be GARNER

Electoral Roll 1934
Robert George GARNER, Muriel GARNER, Robert William GARNER
Merewether St CARDIFF

Title: Re: Can you please help - GARNER
Post by: wivenhoe on Sunday 31 May 15 09:00 BST (UK)

correction to 1894 marriage.......

WW1 Elias Edward McALLISTER #5932 also has NOK Clara Alberta THOMPSON

NSW BDM birth
3768 / 1897 McALLASTER Elias Edward      Hill End
parents William E F and Hannah C

marriage
4145 / 1894 MACMASTER William E F  m. GARNER Hannah C         Hill End

death
10243 / 1963   Mc ALLISTER Elias Edward      Wallsend
parents William Edward F and Hannah Clara

page 7 / 39 of his WW1 file has father   Henry GARNER ( with "x")
                                              mother   deceased
                                              guardian Glendora LAWSON
Signature of Glendora LAWSON, and Henry GARNER looks the same, so maybe "x" means she has signed for Henry.

 death
23026/1937  GARNER Robert                                          Randwick   (27 Oct 1937)
parents George / Clara

23026/1937  GARNER Robert George
Mother  CLARA
Father-
At  RANDWICK

It looks like the woman as NOK on the WW1 history was nee  Clara Alberta CADMAN and married in 1918 to THOMPSON
EDIT. This is not the correct woman . It is a co-incidence of names.

Granny

It would be a help to hear from Granny as to how much of her searches are factual. Some of the details in the OP have a note of uncertainty about them.

Whether this Robert GARNER is definitely the one she is seeking, or one of the several others.

The 1891 birth, and 1892 death for Robert G GARNER to Clara mother look like the one child....record to see at Benevolent Asylum.

Could be a coincidence of names with WW1  GARNER, but Asylum record might be useful to see.

And five days between marriage and death, 1937?...... and wife Muriel cannot name his parents?

Some certificates would be handy here.

Robert George MCALISTER (aka Garner) & his brother Elias Edward MCALISTER are both on the Hill End WW1 Honour Roll. There is also a photo of him & further information about the family that can found on the Hill End & Tambaroora Gathering Group website.

Possibly the birth of Clara

15070/1866 GARNER   Clara

This couple have about 9 listed births in NSW some in Tambaroora and Hill End and some in Sydney

One of these births was Charles

16657/1868  GARNER Charles J
Parents  Charles & Maria
At TAMBAROORA

This news item describes a case where Charles GARNER is accused of rape in Hill End
He is not charged, but the article gives some clues about the family including that his father is a miner and "a coloured man"

This reply may be repeating some information already given ::)

Muriel AULD was AULD by marriage, not birth.

She married
8929/1909
AULD    William R
TILSON Muriel
At PETERSHAM

There were two sons before 1914

44528/1911 AULD Robert W
Parents William R & Muriel
At PETERSHAM

17443/1913 AULD John D
Parents William R & Muriel
At PETERSHAM

Who Died
80347/1973 AULD John D
Parents William Robert & Muriel
At NEWCASTLE

The son Robert William lived with Muriel and Robert George GARNER in 1935 at Cardiff  and used the name GARNER. He also enlisted for ww2 under the name GARNER

 http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/Veteran.aspx?ServiceId=A&VeteranId=415121.

By  1936 Rita Maud is with the family and she uses the name GARNER too, though when she married  Robert used his birth name of AULD

6014/1932
AULD    Robert W
THOMPSON  Rita M

This birth ( as reminder from Wivenhoe, Reply #11).

Parents were Albert Edward and Clara Alberta

21331 / 1914  THOMPSON Rita M
Parents  Albert E& Clara A
At Hill End

In 1943, Robert George GARNER  is still registered to vote and is living with Robert WILLIAM  GARNER and his wife Rita Maud GARNER at Byer Ave Hill End.

So it seems  unlikely that the Robert GARNER death at  Randwick in 1937 is the husband of Muriel

Though, of course  ???

I am not certain, but  Muriel’s husband William Robert , may have lived until 1970 in the Warringah district

This seems to be the (puzzling  ??? ???) death of Muriel nee TILSON.
(you will note the parents match those given on the birth, see above)
If she married GARNER in 1937, why is she under the name AULD

12331/1979  AULD Muriel
Parents John and Sarah Ann.

This  name (Muriel AULD) does not appear on the electoral roll  in NSW until 1954

1954
AULD, Muriel. 5 Winnie St. Cremorne
Same address is Robert AULD of no occ.
Neither appear again

GrannyPG....much good information  here in response to your enquiry. Can you indicate if this advances your research?

NSW BDM death
12331 / 1979 LAWSON Muriel  parents John / Sarah Ann
12331 / 1979 AULD      Muriel  parents John / Sarah Ann

See reply #9 for LAWSON

In the 1870s Hill End and Tambaroora were part of the Wellington Police District.  The police helped compile the electoral rolls.   The 1878 Electoral Roll for Wellington includes the following entries which may help

George GAIN, Dubbo, a freeholder at Tambaroora
William GARNER, Narroogal, a freeholder at Bell River
Patrick GAYNON, Tambaroora, a freeholder at Tambaroora
Alfred MARRIS, residence Golden Gully
John MARRIS, residence, Hillend

Various GARNER, including Charles James, with Hill End Gold leases noted there too.

May I please acknowledge the fine contribution from my friends Kaye and Billie in the compiling of that particular index.
