Can anyone help me find my great great grandfather James Cheetham. The only details I have for him are the very scant details taken from his son William's marriage entry. William was married on the 7 November 1852 at All Saints Wigan, to Ann Porter. William was age 20 and his address was given as Schofield Lane. Ann's address was Warrington Lane and her father was William Porter, Watchmaker. William's father was James, a collier. I have tried to trace William (as I assume he would still have been living with his father up to his marriage) on both the 1841 and 1851 census returns, but have had no success. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you found William on the censuses AFTER his marriage, to find where he says he was born?
Then you can work back to censuses before the marriage with more accuracy.
Modified to add - I can see two possibles on 1861 census. What children did William and Ann have? That will lead to the right one.

On the 1861 census, he is living at Coal Pit Lane, Parr and his place of birth is given as Eccleston, Lancashire. His children are:
Eleanor - 1853
Benjamin - 1854
William - 1856
Henry - 1858
Thomas - 1861.
On 1841 an 1851 census I have tried 'clicking' on other Cheethams in the hope that they might be William's brothers, but to no avail, they either don't have a brother William or if they do, he is not old enough to be my William, so still no luck in finding William's father James.

Thanks for all the info - I had checked out Margaret on the 1841 census, but unfortunately none of the ones I found appeared to be living with family at the time.

Hi
I think the family may have been split up, look at this burial
Ellen Cheetham ~ 14 May 1837 All Saints, Rainford, Lancashire, England
Age: 44 yrs
Abode: Eccleston
Note in R.H. Column: New ground No. 25, James Cheetham 2 breadths.
New marriage for father James, maybe. With young children a quick remarriage would make sense
24 Sep 1837 St Lukes, Farnworth (Widnes), Lancashire, England
James Cheetham full age, Coal miner, Widower, Eccleston
Ellen Fairclough of full age, Widow, Sutton
Groom's Father: Benjamin Cheetham ~ Engineer
Bride's Father: Peter Hardman, Coal miner
Witnesses: Ralph Platt and Mary Ann Hasleton.
Still not finding them in the census though, I can find Ellen Cheetham (2nd wife) born 1781 with children Peter ,Alice ,Thomas and Mary Ann, all children surnames Fairclough, in Standish. Ref: Class HO107, Piece: 527, Book 13, Folio 26, Page 12, Line 15.
A marriage in 1848 for MARTHA CHEETHAM
21 Aug 1848 All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Joseph Henshall - 22, Barber, Bachelor, Wigan
Martha Cheetham - 21, Spinster, Wigan
Groom's Father: Thomas Henshall, Weaver
Bride's Father: James Cheetham, Dead
Witnesses: Peter Topping and Dorothy Topping.
And a possible burial for JAMES CHEETHAM in Shevington, Standish ( where 2nd wife Ellen is living in 1841)
16 Jun 1840 St Wilfrid, Standish, Lancashire, England
James Cheetham -
Age: 51 yrs
Abode: Shevington

Thanks Claire, really appreciate your help.

On checking the details, if the James Cheetham who married Ellen Dearden in 1809 is the same James Cheetham who died in 1840 aged 51, this would mean he was only 11 at the time of his marriage, which surely can't be possible?

Hi Claire
Ignore my last message, if the 2 James are one and the same, it would have made him around 20 at the time of his marriage not 11 - I suffer from senior moments occasionally
