Title: Hertfordshire/Ware Parish marriage look up: STAMP
Post by: bowiewhist on Monday 18 May 15 16:40 BST (UK)
I am seeking a firm date for a marriage between Jonathan STAMP and Jane (surname unknown) in or close to Ware, Hertfordshire in the 1820s up to 1831. Jonathan is born c1794. He and Jane have a daughter - Ann Maria - in c1830.

Many thanks for any assistance from those visiting Herts records offices.

I'm a little wary of this family (although they could be the ones) as Jonathan is given with his full name in the 1871 census so finding a surname for the right Jane is paramount which a marriage date might give me.  Many of the Stamps are barge people which makes them potentially inconsistent with details.

Where do you have Ann Maria on census.  Who did she marry & when/where.

ADDED  Where & when did Jonathan die

I have a Jonathan Stamp living with his daughter and her husband on the 1871 census.  She is married to a James Bardell (assuming this is the right family). I have no death for Jonathan but I can't find him on 1881 census so presume it is within that 10 year window.

A few bits and pieces that are hopefully relevant-
1851 census - Stamp family in Stanstead Abbots
         John STAMP (58),
          - his wife Jane (57) plus children Jonathan (22), Ann Maria (18) & Isabella (16)
          - all born Ware
1852: Ann Maria Stamp married James Bardell
(Think her brother Jonathan married at the same time)

1861 census: John Stamp(70) and his wife Jane (68) are lodgers in Baldock St Ware

1865 Jane Stamp (73) buried Ware 5 Feb 1865 (of Watton Road Ware)

1871 Census: Jonathan Stamp is with Ann Maria & her husband James Bardell in Ware

1876 John Stamp (86) buried Ware 20 Feb 1876 (of Watton Road Ware)

After all that I still haven't found a marriage for John/Jonathan Stamp & Jane

A possibility:
John Stamp married Jane Clark 20 Nov 1818 Tottenham MSX

Couldn't see a marriage in St Mary's Ware PR's

I would agree, the death for John in 1876 and the Tottenham marriage were the only ones I could see that fitted.

The two burials are of particular interest - I have come across the census info before - but now that you have years of death potentially then I can see if there are corresponding GRO details to match - even if they have been mis-transcribed.
It isn't beyond possibility that they married in London as there are other family connections certainly with Clerkenwell and Isslington.  I am very grateful for the extra pairs of eyes!

When Ann Maria Stamp married James Bardell she did not give any details about her father.  There was just a line for his name and occupation as often appears when a child is illegitimate.  The baptism does however name both Johnathan & Jane

How odd. Given that he lived with them later it seems a strange thing to miss him off the marriage detail - the parish records of the baptism certainly flag up when others have been born illegitimately around the same time, whereas, as you say, both parents are fully acknowledged as tho married.  Again, thanks!
