Sorry to advise, may need to connect laptops to power supply to complete this months updates! :o
Just done 1 of 3 laptops (windows 7) half hour from start to finish to complete 17updates, I have seen paint dry quicker.
Suggest you all pick a time when it's quiet, like lunch/supper time when updates are installed.

We quite often find one of the Windows updates takes forever.
That is why we never install updates at the begining of a session
-
Yes most of the ones i get take a while, one of them in particular .

I find it amusing (if that is the right word ::) ) that one particular MS packet (NetFrameworks) was about 50 MB big when it was introduced, and since then, there have been several hundred MB in updates !!
Like, you buy a new car, and then the manufacturers send you the equivalent of 5 cars worth of updated bits and pieces, just to keep it on the road :o

ps .
When I switch off my computer at work, I sometimes get a message
"Updates being loaded, do not switch off your computer"
So I don't, I just leave it and go home. The computer switches itself off after the updates are finished, but when I switch it on again the next day ...
"Updates are being installed 1 of ..... "
and then it's just "abwarten und Tee trinken !" as the saying (here) goes !
("wait and drink tea")

I always check what updates are "ready for download".
Why do I need an update for Silverlight, when I don't use Silverlight?
Ditto Internet Exploder?
Ditto .Net?
Do I really need Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, when I already use an anti-virus program?
De-selecting the 9 updates for the above, saves me 86.9 MB!

Website developers use Silverlight to render websites for use on various operating systems and browsers so you need it to view these sites properly. It's often used for video streaming so if you don't use NetFlix, itvPlayer, Amazon etc. you probably don't need it.
.Net is required by some programs and is usually installed by a program that needs it. So it's debatable whether you need to keep applying updates after installation unless your program itself is updated... :)
Some aspects of Internet Explorer are used by some programs e.g. checking you have a valid licence, security etc.
I hop that helps

.net I found out is used by my sat nav for one.

Hi All,
There was once a time, not so long ago, when Microsoft Updates were patches for their software. As Bob pointed out they no longer patch anything, preferring to replace altogether IE, .Net framework files etc. Very annoying if you are like me on restricted traffic each month.
I've previously moaned about .Net on RootsChat as I didn't think I used it anywhere but having had a problem with AVG antivirus I found that uses it as does Family Tree Analyser (G**gl* it) so I can't now eliminate .Net as I'd like. Thanks Brian for the tip about SatNav. Any more user applications known to RootsChatters I wonder?

When were these updates due because this week my computer is sooooooo slow.
-
My wife and I were notified about the updates today, neither of us had any problems and for me it was interesting to see that a update from last month which kept failing did install today.

The word is 'some networks are running sloooow' because of the volume of users doing updates.

[It can only get worse! Windows 10 due for release soon, imagine all Windows 7/8 updating their machines] teddy bears out of the window I would imagine. :o

Windows 10 is mooted for release sometime after July this year. It has also been stated that a free download will be available for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users. The free period is to last for 1 year. I intend giving it a good 6 months for any faults/errors to surface before taking advantage. It has also been hinted that MS are working on the first updates for Windows 10 - I don't know how true that is.

I had 29 updates. Used it just after and was okay. Then next time logging on got multiple windows of firefox browser. I tried shutting down and rebooting and then had same problem , however firefox i refreshed it and it worked. Fingers crossed it stays that way. I had trouble last time, with the updates.

Hi, if I had updates previously installed which as KG points out are probably not required would it be possible to "uninstall" these to save memory/room?

An explanation of what Silverlight is/does?

An explanation of what .NET is/does?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework)
The .Net framework is used to interact between your pc/notebook
and web based data. It is the forerunner to the cloud computing
idea that M$ wants/needs everyone to use apps/tools remotely installed.
For RC's that use An****ry, .Net is an integral part of disseminating
info to and from your pc/notebook.
Hope this helps.

I am unable to use Ancestry on my phone!
Ancestry, and Android, insist I live in a non-permitted territory?!

Coincidentally soon after I posed my query, when it came to turning off my computer I was met with "install and shut down".
Eventually the computer turned itself off but I was surprised when I next turned the computer on to see another notice that there were more updates to install. Hopefully there was no problem with the original installation, which has happened in the past.

I got 3 for Windows 7 on Tuesday, they downloaded when I finished, and I thought the next day when i started up, "Got off light this month" For some reason I got them in 2 batches the other 14 were lying in wait Wednesday. Why does this sometimes happen?
-
I've sometimes had 3 updates following a load of them. I also had a scammer on the phone this time whilst my computer was updating. "windows tec line". I've this phone call before and your told your computer is accessing sites it should n't. I said "oh yes and this is a rubbish phone call". She was flumoxed and i put the phone down. That could seriously worry someone whilst their computer was updating.

I've got my fingers crossed that there's a problem with Firefox because ten minutes ago when I tried to gain access to rootschat via my bookmarked rootschat 'Home' page, I got a mishmash of words and no images. The only reason I'm on the site now is because I'm using something called "Chrome" and now everything on rootschat site looks fine.
-
Phew - one sleep later and I discovered that I could get back to normal viewing by refreshing Firefox.
However, I now have three "animated" adverts on this page and I'm wondering if this is my computer or can everyone else see them?
Adverts are ebay "Summer Time", Financial Times and one other.
