Title: Scottish parish name John McDonald and Isobell Scrimzeour in the parish of..
Post by: JanetRu on Tuesday 12 May 15 02:30 BST (UK)
I am trying to decipher the name of the parish in this old parish register entry.
I think the entry reads Dec. 8th John McDonald and Isobell Scrimzeour in the parish of ---- had their child baptized and named Alexander.

Can you give maybe give us the church for the register?  Or any other place names on the record to possibly link into?

Also, I think that your z is a g - as in in Scrimgeour.

I think it says "Dow".

Seeing as the baptism (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X14G-TQT) is from the parish of Logierait (Perthshire), I would suggest this is a spelling of the neighboring parish of Dull. I've not got an ounce of Scots in me, but I think Dow would be pronounced more like Doo, which sounds similar to Dull.

Jeanne - the letter yogh in Scrimzeour is usually transcribed 'z', though of course it was spoken with more of a 'g' sound.

Thanks Alistair, all good!

Just found this.  Do you think this might be them?

Index only record on Ancestry Marriage of John McDonald to Isabell Scrimgor 1 January 1830.
Parish of Findo-Gask, Perth, Scotland.

Hope this might be helpful in some way!

The entry is from Logierait, Perthshire in 1695.

Thanks for the comments. I had got nowhere looking through parish lists. I hadn't thought about it from a phonetic viewpoint.

Alexander's comments are correct. Dow = Dull.

A final "ll" often becomes "w" in Scots. I use it myself, for example "row" for "roll". In the north east of Scotland a morning roll is a "rowie".

;D. And in Ayrshire, a row is Raw!

Thank you all so much. This is another brick wall down and out (I hope). I only joined up yesterday and I am super impressed.
