Hiya gang!
I wonder if anyone could sort out this lovely portrait, please. It's been hand coloured, obviously, and they didn't do a bad job. But the grey undertones are still there and I don't know if it would be possible to correct that. Sharon doesn't have the original b&w, alas.
I think the texture could stay. Too much smoothing would wreck it, I think.
Thanks muchly :)
Cheers,
China

Bit warmer perhaps:

Lovely, jf, thanks very much! That's really nice!
I just talked to Sharon and she says her mum was a "spring" in colouring, if you know what that means :) She wore blue a lot as it suited her. Sharon thinks the dress was somewhere in between these two blues, or maybe even a little more turquoise...?
If that wouldn't be too much trouble? :)

Beyond me..... Someone will be able :-)

A try from me, regards, John.

SWEET! Sharon will be so pleased, these are wonderful! Than you so much!
JF, that is an amazing blue, what do you mean it's "beyond you" :) It's perfect :) The b&w's are super as well and just in my own opinion nicer than the original colourising.
Hoobaloo, such an interesting shade and close to the original but definitely blue, and not that kind of indeterminate gray. Thank you for your work!
Pablo, a very sweet colour and just the shade of pink that's in fashion right now, so kind of you! Thank you!
Sharon is watching the thread and although she can't post (at the moment) I know she will be so pleased!
Cheers,
China

what a beautiful photo china. She has a beautiful smile. I haven't heard "spring colour" used in awhile. I know exactly what that is. I evened out the tones and made levels adjustments also. , Tommy

Some great restores, eh Caz? Sharon's chuffed! :D
-
I agree there are some lovely ones. Shame about the texture though, pity it was ever invented IMO, but you can look past it and see the beautiful photo and colourings underneath.

I know...I thought that texture was a 70s thing, surprised to see it on a photo almost a century old!

I had a go too...Lovely photo.

One a bit different.

And two more.

I see you already have a lot of excellent restores. Here is a late one to add. I did my best to reduce the texture but not get rid of it entirely. I think it gives something of a painterly look to the photo.
Cheers Al

And a 'pink' version.... nice photo to work on.

Woohoo! Absolutely smashing! I love them and Sharon is going to be thrilled...not that she's not already thrilled :D Carol, the green is wonderful and did you "green" the eyes just a bit? That colour suits her so well. Terry, what wonderful colours you used, thank you for what must have taken you a lot of time! Al, haven't seen you in a while and I think I owe you a message...? I don't remember what we were talking about though :P Thank you for a beautiful colouration and you're right, the texture looks like canvas. The grey is a bit mysterious, don't you think? :)
Beautiful, and again thank you all for wonderful work! I don't think I've seen such a great array of interpretations in a while. I've pinged Sharon to let her know there are more posts on the board :)

Hi everyone, I wanted to extend a personal thanks to each and every one of you. The pictures turned out really awesome, you are true artists!
Japeflakes...for the turquoise! & the black & whites
Hoobaloo....love the grey!
Pablo59...love what you did, making it so soft and almost impressionistic
Mozza29...another fabulous blue
Saddles.....what's amazing about yours is that my mom & dad had a pic taken of them in their 70's, and her dress is a lighter shade of the pink you used! love!
tommyfromri....(is that Rhode Island? I grew up outside of Taunton, Mass.) again, love the color of the dress...and her eyes
Treetotal...love them both! again, the eyes...she had very light blue eyes :-)
terry h....love them all, and you managed to make a lovely almost neutral bluish-grey dress out of that pic, and then that pink!
Aladdin...loved the way you used the texture, you're right, it does look "painterly" :-)
I am so so so touched that you guys all took the time to do this. And the cool thing? is those are all colors she *would* have worn!
I love them all & have downloaded them to their own folder on my computer, which I'll share with all my family!
Thank you all again so much!!!!

Thanks China...yes they are blue/green...I like it too mostly because it looks a little faded and old...rather than that "Taken Yesterday" look. It's personal taste I suppose.

Thought I'd do something different. I've gone the Hollywood Glam look!
