Title: A bit of colour for my Great Grandfathers military portrait Frank Clarke
Post by: rjb1984 on Friday 08 May 15 18:31 BST (UK)
Hi,

I'm looking for someone to help add colour to a black and white photo of my Great Grandfather's military portrait. I've seen a few companies online that offer their services with varying costs.

Can anybody here recommend someone?

Thanks,

Rich

Why do you not post it on here and see what the restorers on this site can do with it. This service is free.

Thank you Trishanne,

I would never presume something was free. Especially considering the quotes I've had so far........!

I'll try and upload the photo. It's quite a large file. Now I know that he had jet black hair. I've no idea what colour eyes. (So his daughter tells me)

I have a file with the medal ribbon colours in the order he's wearing them in the photo, if it's needed?

Thank you.

Rich

*edit* - He would of been around forty years old in this photo. So I guess his hair wouldn't be all black!

Hi  Rich,   Here is a tidy for the original. I have a colour version I've almost completed but I would like to know what colours to use for the ribbon colours. I'll finish it tomorrow as it's 1:30 am here in the USA.   , Tommy

Here's mine without the medals coloured as I am also waiting to find out the authentic colours.  I will post an amended version when known.

Wow, they all look fantastic. It's going to be hard to choose one to frame now!

I can't thank you all enough.

I've had to jiggle with the photos attached. The ribbons were initially the wrong way around, thus why they're at a weird angle. The badge is the one worn on his left arm, which can just be seen on the photo.

I've included a photo of the medals to give a better idea of the ribbon colours, the ribbons themselves are faded. There are two medals missing from the photo. One was never mounted, the other - we don't know. It's a mystery of the family!

Again, thank you

Rich

Hi Rich

Here's my finished version.  If the colours are not correct, happy to change it.

Rich, you are going to have a tough job to choose one to frame, they are all so beautiful.  A great job by the Rootschat restorers yet again.  You are so lucky to have such a wonderful picture of your Great Grandfather and to have all of his medals.

Good evening,

Hi Rich, strange to see this photo again. I remember the first time when we were checking on his regt and the medals.

It always amazes me the job the restorers and colourists can do. Well done to all of them.

At the risk of upsetting some of them though, the red hat band is incorrect as he is a Lt Colonel serving with a regt. Staff officers had the red band and would have red lapel flashes with oak leaves to go with it.

Hi John,

I got as far as I could with the research for him. The colour restored photo is the icing on the cake and I know my Great Aunt will love it.

As for the historical accuracy, I did wonder. Thank you for letting me know. I've a real hard time deciding which photo to go with, they're all fantastic.

Thank you all for doing this. I'm amazed at how quickly it was completed!

Hi Rich.......Its a pity that you did not post the colour of the ribbons seeing that you had them in your possession.

It makes it so much easier if colours are known that they are posted with the original photo.

regards Carolyn

Typical!  Every photo I Googled had a red band, and being a complete numpty when it comes to things military especially rank, I went with it.  ::)

I agree with the comment about the red cap band, unless he was on the Staff he would not have one.
The leather chinstrap would normally be brown, not black, in a British uniform.
What regiment was he in?  I do not recognise the badges.

He started life in the Royal Army service corps, moved out to India where he transferred to the Royal Indian army service corps. That then became the REME. When the British Empire was dissolved and What was British Inida became India and Pakistan. Frank joined the Pakistan EME in 1947. Sadly he died six months after retiring in 1958. I suspect he had been unwell a while but a long and interesting career.

I had not thought of the Pakistan Army, which explains the crescent at the top of the badge where a crown would be for the UK!  The badge did look a bit like REME when I first saw it.

A late one for your collection. Brilliant to supply colour refs for your photo, it makes it much quicker to do them :)
