Title: Anyone help with this signature?
Post by: Mo37 on Sunday 26 April 15 22:34 BST (UK)
This is a signature at the bottom of a painting which belonged to my husband's grandmother. I think the surname is Newton but I can't make out the first name. Any help please!

It looks like Miss with the first s being written as an f. They used to do this up to about 1820????

Hi, yes, Miss S Newton gets my vote, with a "Long" S in Miss.

Quite a while ago, I was told about the "Long" S here on RootsChat as I thought a word was "Heffle" when in fact it was "Hessle"
