Hello - I am a newby, just joined as I spotted my Grandfathers name via a general 'google' type search. The entry is relevant to my family but the entry was placed nearly 2yrs ago and I doubt the enquirer will still be checking. How do I bring my update to the attention of the enquirer? (I understand there is a minimum number of posts required to be able to use the PM system.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat...There is a search button on the top of the board...type your relatives name in there and see if it comes up. I think you have to have posted 2 messages before you can send a PM.

Find the thread (via search, above) and post a reply on it!
The people who contributed should get a message/email to say you have contributed.
(Many of us have been on RC longer than 2 years!! ;D)

Linksdale, if you click on the user name it'll tell you when the person was last online, it'll give you a good idea as to whether they're still showing an interest.
Good luck and let us know how you get on. :)

This same thing has happened to me. In general, is it advisable to contact people who are searching for information about your deceased relatives? Is privacy protected when using the PM system to do so? And, what are most people doing with the information (in this case, the poster's words implied that she or he is not a relative)?

Welcome to rootschat PattiD.
Yes, it is safe/private if you contact people via the Personal Messaging System. The admin staff will be able to read your message I think, but not the general public. So if you want to exchange information about anyone who is still living it is advisable to do so privately.
If you have deceased relatives in common then it can be a good idea to post on the appropriate thread as you often find distant cousins this way - people locate rootschat threads often via a google search of ancestor's names, and join up to contribute and make contact. Many of us have found distant and not so distant cousins this way.
It often happens that people do research for others, which is perhaps why you get the impression that the person you refer to may not be a relative. What do they do with the information? Building family trees - either for themselves or others.

Hi Welcome to RootsChat :)
By replying to a persons post or sending a PM it automatically sends out a notification of your reply with a link on how to read it.
All email addresses should be working, if not we normally leave a little note to say the problem underneath the users profile name.
Any emails that do not find the user are looked into and fixed apart from the Private Messages which I can not read so therefore can not advise the lost rootschatter.
People research for all sorts of reasons, who lived in my house....? History of a painter? Local History? etc etc all equally addictive and interesting
Regards
Sarah :)
