Title: Canada death
Post by: snowy owl on Friday 17 April 15 18:04 BST (UK)
Hi all
I have an extensive tree but no experience of Canadian records.  I am trying to find a Scottish born man died 1865 in Canada according to his gravestone.  Is there a central death register for all of Canada?

Thank you in advance

Hi Snowy Owl,

The short answer is no - there are no Central Registries in Canada with BMD records.  There will be some death records available depending on where that death occurred.
Have you looked the through the family search collections to see if anything pops up ?

You could give some details on here, to see if anyone can find anything for you.

Regards
Sandra

Thanks , As i expected! I will try fam search though.  I am looking for John Grant originated from Grantown on Spey ,   I assume he would be adult age when he died  in 1858 in Canada,  as parents and siblings  remained in the village.

Regards

Have you looked to see if there was reference to his death in a death notice in Scottish newspapers ?

Sandra Yes that's  definitely him-  amazing! but what does that tell us?  where does this information come from?  the actual gravestone which I have seen,  doesn't show all the parents dates.

DB sorry i gave conflicting info he died 1858.

Whoops.  I wasn't reading his date of death.  Sorry for the incorrect information.  (I got caught up with the parents' names.  I was on my way out the door and thought I would research for a few minutes while I was waiting.)   ::)

You most likely noticed it but in case you didn't...
from the site Sandra recommended
Elizabeth Grant, daughter of Peter Grant and Isabella Ross, died in Canada 1859.
This entry is on the previous page to John Grant's entry.

I  noticed that but thank you anyway, especially you  trying to seek possible marriage.

on a separate note i have ancestry uk subscription,  would it be worth getting the worldwide one to search for him on a possible census?

and 1861

Have you got birth years for either Elizabeth or John ?

Sandra

only  a broad idea of birth dates. I think they were from a previous marriage to my direct ancestor so I need to do some more research on that.  Either way, looking for name John Grant death or birth is tricky.  :-\

thanks for the fam search tip- ill trawl through the names on that.
