Hi
Can anyone tell me which Barnados Homes would have covered Howden, East Yorkshire for the migration of children to Canada 1908. I am thinking maybe Hull or York. :-\
I have two children, possibly sisters, who were transported together, their births are for Howden reg dist, but they do not appear on census's before they are found on the ships manifest and the Rootschat, Database for Special Interest Groups: Enhancements - New database for British Home Children:
13822 WALKER, Ellen Green 1896 ENG, YKS, Howden 1908 : Dominion Barnardos - no death date
18021 WALKER, Florence 1898 ENG, 1908 : Dominion Barnardos - died 12 Feb 1912
It appears these sisters may have had another two siblings, all the children birth reg Howden and all have middle name of Green, none of them appear on any census's, and I cannot find possible deaths or marriages for the other two siblings that appear not to have been transported. I am sure they would have been enumerated on the census's if they were in the Workhouse or Children's Homes but I cannot find anything.
Gertrude Green Walker Dec Q 1891 Howden, Yorkshire, England
Thomas Green Walker Dec Q 1893 Howden, Yorkshire, England
Ellen Green Walker Dec Q 1896 Howden, Yorkshire, England
Florry Green Walker Sep Q 1898 Howden, Yorkshire, England
Both surnames Green and Walker were and still are in Howden, of which Walker is my paternal line. I have a feeling these children were all illigitimate, but without purchasing a birth cert for each or finding them on census's with anyone, this is like a needle in a haystack jobby.
I am from Howden so know the area extremely well, if anyone can help in locating any information I would greatly appreciate this.
Kind regards

Many thanks for that death, strange how we can look for things and cannot see "wood for tree's".
Just to find Thomas Green Walker now, certainly is puzzling and frustrating, hopefully he will be found, somewhere.

Ciderdrinker, thanks and I think I may have found another as I have located Ellen Walker as Helen Walker (corrected to Ellen) brn 1897 in Gwillimbury West, Simcoe South, Ontario, Servant, immigrated 1909, both dates fit and which along with another servant a George Walker, brn c1889 England, immigrated 1911 and there is a George Walker who was transported 1899, could this be coincidence or is he another sibling.
BumbleB, thanks and interesting too

Have you tried the Ups and Downs index for any mention of these girls?

Florence is listed on my web site under deaths and burials.

Florence Green Walker
Born: 1898
Died: Feb 1912, Toronto, Ontario
Cause: Tubercular pneumonia
was born in 1898; in the 1901 UK census she is three years old, living with her parents George (26) and Edith (21) in Kettlestone, Norfolk, England. Also listed are her sister Ellen, age one, and her widowed grandmother Martha Walker, 62. George is shown as a carter on a farm.
I haven't been able to determine what happened to Florence's parents.
Florence was 10 when she arrived in 1908 on the Dominion, via Barnardos. Ellen Green Walker, 11, is on the same ship. (I think ellen's age is incorrect either on the passenger list or the 1901 uk census, i suspect the former.)
Unable to find florence on the 1911 census, but Ellen is in Gwillimbury, Ont, a servant for the Hambleys on their farm. I wonder what happened to ellen, and if she knew where her sister was laid to rest.
Florence Walker died Feb 1912 of Tubercular pneumonia in Toronto. Address was given as 50 Peter Street, buried from Bates & Dodds. She was 14.

Hi everyone
I now have the birth certificate for ELLEN GREEN the surname as noted on the birth certificate and not Walker.
Her mother was Sarah Ann Walker and her father was Nelson Green
She was born 25 July 1896 at Drewton, South Cave, East Yorkshire and Nelson Green was the informant.
I have tracked these folk and do find sibling Florence too with them, not obtained her birth certificate as yet, all the children had surname of Walker and some Green, I cannot find a marriage for the parents, still much work to do with more research too to see how all the children are related to each other.
I am in the process of collating all the information and forwarding to the British Home Children who were placed in Lambton County, Ontario.
