Title: Ruddick/Teasdale of Crosby Ravensworth
Post by: Robinvan on Tuesday 14 April 15 11:41 BST (UK)
A cousin and I were just talking of our ancestors and googled our great grandmother, Agnes Sprout Wilson. We were excited to see entries by millsie and others placed here in 2007, which showed lots of information. Has anyone yet discovered why the name change from Ruddick to Teasdale happened? One story was that Anthony, an ironmonger, fell in love with Agnes, but did not think that he was good enough for her, so changed his name to Teasdale, the surname of his boss, the owner of the foundry, to try to impress Agnes. It was interesting to note that the name change seemed to have happened after their marriage. I agree that the family were buried as Teasdale, but the only remaining headstone at Karrakatta cemetery in Peth is that of Mary Nicholson Teasdale - it is a military headstone as she was a nurse during the war.

Hi Robinvan.

I've just spotted your comment (in response to my 2007 post) that Agnes Sprout (Sprott) Wilson is your gr-grandmother.  Agnes is my gr-gr-grandmother via her daughter Christina Morton Teasdale (later Mills).  I'm excited to finally discover some descendants on this branch of my family tree and would love to make contact to share information.

Re: the name change from Ruddick to Teasdale, I've not found an answer (yet) but another researcher did find a link between the Ruddick family and a Teasdale family in Westmoreland several generations prior to Anthony.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi

Robinvan needs to make 2 more posts before he can use the pm system to contact you (or you him)

Replying to this post twice will do the trick

Hi again CaroleW.  I've been away from rootschat for a while so not up on how it works currently.  I have PMed Robinvan - does that mean he/she will be able to reply to my message.  Thanks.

Hi

New members have to make 3 posts before they can send a pm

I was always under the impression that also applied to receiving pm's from established members and have just tried to send a pm to Robinvan but got an error message

Hi Millsie,

Agnes is my gr-gr-grandmother too. Robinvan is my Auntie and we have both tried searching for an answer to the Ruddick/Teasdale name change but I haven't managed to find anything by searching through records. Robin's chat with her South Australian cousin is probably the closest we will get to finding out the reason for the name change.

Would love to hear from you as I spent quite a bit of time a few years ago searching family trees.

I am excited about contact with Millsie with respect to the Teasdale family. Among my old records are the funeral notices for Agnes Sprout Teasdale who died on 11/01/1940. There is also a newspaper article referring to her as "a kindly Scotswoman ... celebrates her 94th birthday today after 75 years in Australia." She came out from Ayr in 1862 as a 19 year old.

I would love to get into direct contact with Millsie; we plan to travel to the east coast again next year.

Hi Millsie,
The name Teasdale has unexpectedly 'popped up' in my family history in WA too.
My Gt Grandmother Ada Maud Florence Hall was the daughter of James Anderton Hall and Lillian Helena Bruce. However her death notice in the paper was listed as "daughter of Mrs Teasdale".
I have no idea when or where the name was changed but would be interested to know if we have a link somewhere.
Happy Hunting,
Milllie Mac   :)

Hi Katrina J and Robinvan,

So good to hear from you both.  I would love to hear where you fit into the Teasdale family tree, share information and put our heads together re: the name change. As it seems we are having trouble sending private messages via rootschat, please feel free to email me directly at janeh4573 at gmail dot com

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Millie Mac,

I've found the death notice for Ada Florence Maud Solberg, eldest daughter of Mrs. F W Teesdale of Leederville WA.  I've checked electoral rolls and find listings for Frederick W and Lilian Teesdale.  Checking WA marriage records, Frederick William Teesdale married Lilian Helena Hall in 1893.  I also note the death of James Anderson Hall in 1889.  I don't think there is a connection to our Teasdale family.

Good luck with your research.

Millsie
