Having been such a great help on my paternal grandmother's side of the Chilton-home family , I was wondering if you or someone else could help with my maternalgrandmother and her forebears.
GERTRUDE ROWLANDS BORN 1887 married ERNEST CHILTON 16.06.1907
At Lache with Saltney near Chester.
Her father was Thomas Rowlands. I think she might have been born in Birkenhead.
At the age of 14 she was a servant for Edward Dale , Newry Park , Chester.
She died in August 1944 in Bangor.
I am trying to trace Thomas Rowlands but have had no luck.
Please can you help or point me in the right direction.

Her father was Thomas Rowlands.
I think she might have been born in Birkenhead.

Hi to all those Roots experts out there.
I am new to this game but have made some headway on the Chilton side of my family (my mother's maiden name).
I am now working on Gertrude Rowlands ,my grandmother, but now that I am 70 there are no family members left to ask.
I believe Gertrude Rowlands was born in 1887 in Birkenhead.
Her father was Thomas Rowlands and her mother Mary ( maiden name unknown).
Gertrude married Edward Chilton in 1907 in Saltney.
She died in Bangor in 1944.
If anyone can help me find out about Thomas Rowlands, Mary and their family I would be very grateful.

Possible marriage - Holywell Registration District - September quarter 1872 - Thomas Rowlands and Mary Roberts. NorthwalesBMD suggest the marriage took place at St Michael, Brynford.
Elizabeth Rowlands' birth registered 1873 in Holywell Registration District.
Gertrude Rowlands - birth registration September quarter 1887 - Birkenhead. Baptism at Christ Church, Claughton with Grange (in Birkenhead Registration District) - 5 August 1887 (private baptism) - FindMyPast. Added: Daughter of Thomas and Mary Rowlands, Mount Grove. Occupation = Labourer.

I am not sure if you have the 1911 census details for Ernest Chilton and Gertrude (Rowlands). The information on this is as follows:
Living at 81 Ewart Street, Saltney Ferry.
Ernest Chilton, head, age 23, married, 2 children born alive and still living. Occupation: Railway Shunter, London and N W Railway. Born Tarvin, Cheshire. Language spoken: English.
Gertrude Chilton, age 23, born Birkenhead. Language spoken: English.
May Chilton, daughter, age 3, born Mold Junc, Flints. Language spoken: English.
Annie Chilton, daughter, age 2, born Mold Junc, Flints. Language spoken: English
Hugh Griffith Jones, Boarder, age 29, single, Railway Brakesman London and NW Railway. Born Betts Y Coed, Caern. Language spoken: Both.
The street they lived in, Ewart Street, is still there today. This was in Wales and this remains the case now.
Ernest Chilton can be found on the Railway Staff database in the Cheshire Archives. It shows he was an Under Shunter at Mold Junction, appointed 1902. The actual records can be examined in the Record Office in Chester.

The details given for the family in the 1881 census appear to be the right ones.
The family are living in 6 Claude Road, West Derby.
Thomas Rowlands, Head, married, age 34, General Labourer, born Anglesey.
Mary Rowlands, wife, age 29, born Flintshire.
Elizabeth Rowlands, daughter, age 7, born Flintshire.
Jesse Rowlands, son, age 5, born Liverpool, Lancs.
Annie Rowlands, daughter, age 4, born Liverpool, Lancs.
Thomas Jones, married, Boarder, age 29, Engine Driver, mechanized Brick making (???) Born Caernarvonshire.
David G Hughes, Boarder, widr, age 27, House Joiner, born Anglesey.
There may have been links between Thomas Jones and David Hughes and this family.
It would help to find Thomas in the 1871 census in order to see if his place of birth is given more accurately.

Another piece of the jigsaw, thank you.The Rowlands family appear to have moved around a lot in North Wales and Merseyside. Railways are in the family blood and I still have a similar passion. I can sit reading a European rail timetable for hours (sad!).

I am pleased this was of help to you.
It is a strange coincidence but my ancestors worked for London NW Railway and in Mold at the same time as your ancestors. My gt grandfather left Mold and went to Holyhead where he remained until he retired.
I have lived in North Wales and Chester/Cheshire for most of my life but am not there now (unfortunately) :(
I am quite busy at the moment but will try to find some more information for you shortly.

I am struggling to identify Thomas Rowlands in earlier census returns. I cannot find him in the 1871.
There are 6 people by the name of Thomas Rowlands in the 1851 census born and living on Anglesey. It is impossible to decide which of these is your Thomas. The most likely candidate to me is Thomas Rowlands, son of William and Anne Rowlands. The family is living at Llanedwen and Thomas is shown as born Llanedwen. The entry reads as follows:
William Rowlands, head, married, age 36, Agr Labr, bornAnglesey, Llangristiolys,
Anne Rowlands, wife, age 31, born Anglesey, Llangeinwen.
Anne Rowlands, daughter, age 11, born Anglesey, Llanfair PG.
Mary Rowlands, daughter, age 9, born Anglesey ???
William Rowlands, son, age 7, born Anglesey, Llanedwen.
Jemimah Rowlands, daughter, age 5, born Llanedwen.
Thomas Rowlands, son, age 3, born Llanedwen.
Elizabeth Rowlands, daughter, age 1 month, born Llanedwen.
There is a family by the name of Rowlands living next to them. This is headed by Richard Rowlands, farmer.
There is an entry for Thomas Rowlands in the 1861 and this appears to be the same person. He is living in Llanedwen and is a servant on a farm there. The head of the household is Lewis Jones. The people in this include 3 people by the name of Roberts.
I cannot be sure this is the right person. I think the only way you are going to establish the identity of Thomas will be to obtain his marriage certificate which will give his father's name.
