Title: Elizabeth Maxwell Born In Scotland bef 1765 but where in Scotland?
Post by: dunvr on Tuesday 07 April 15 06:39 BST (UK)
I seem to have limited info to go on here but I am looking for the baptism of Elizabeth Maxwell in Scotland and the name of her parents. I suppose she could be born anywhere from 1755 to 1762 if she married around 1780. I cannot even find a marriage cert so cannot confirm the marriage date of 1780. She may have married in Scotland or Ireland. Any help tracking down her Scots line appreciated I am mainly looking to trace her Maxwell line in Scotland. Thanks in advance.

THOMAS MACNAB was born 1760 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and died Aft. 1785 in Possibly- North Ireland. He married ELIZABETH MAXWELL Aft. 1780. She was born Bef. 1765 in Scotland, and died Aft. 1865 in Possibly- North Ireland. Elizabeth Maxwell lived to be 105 years old. It is thought that she was an albino.

Children:
i. ROBERT MACNAB, b. Bef. 1785, Unknown Location; d. Unknown, Unknown Location. no documented
ii. GEORGE MACNAB, b. Bef. 1785, Unknown Location; d. Unknown, Unknown Location. no documented proof
iii. PETER MACNAB, b. Bef. 1785, Unknown Location; d. Unknown, Unknown Location.no documented proof
iv.JOSEPH MACNAB, b. Bef. 1785.no documented proof
v. HENRY (HARRY) MACNAB, b. Abt. 1785, North Ireland; emigrated 1831 to Ontario, Canada. Lived in Mulmur twp. Simcoe Co. Ontario, Canada. d. Bef. 1871, in Melanchon Township, (Simcoe County) Ontario, Canada. He married ELIZABETH LIVINGSTONE Bef. December 1816 in North Ireland (Church of England). She was born Abt. 1795 in North Ireland, and died Aft. 1871 in Mulmur Corners, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada.
Henry MacNab was a soldier in the 83rd Irish Regiment of Foot under Wellington in the Napoleonic campaign. The 83rd later became the 1st Battalion of Royal Irish Rifles.

Yes, without any further information you're unlikely to track down the correct Elizabeth Maxwell. For births prior to 1855 in Scotland there are only church baptism records to go on, and these are notoriously incomplete so there may not even be a record for your Elizabeth's birth.

Given that her son Henry McNab was a soldier, and there are indications of movement from Scotland to Northern Ireland in the later 1700s, there's a good chance Thomas McNab was also a soldier. Have you looked for any military records for him?

Ancestry have several records for a Thomas McNab born about 1759, all showing him enlisting with the 18th Dragoon Guards in August 1784. The records say nothing more about him. (The set of records has been titled Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service by Ancestry but this is a mistake on Ancestry's part as they have nothing to do with Canada!) Would be worth researching the 18th Dragoon Guards and seeing whether they were stationed in Northern Ireland.

agree with j m Strachan here, the military search looks the best option. Find my past, may throw a connection up, there is a john henry mcnab Chelsea pensioner born Armagh 1886.

Sorry to sound so cynical, but I'm surprise to see to much content here but with little proof of the facts.  For instance, if Thomas and Elizabeth's children's baptisms have not been found, nor their own marriage, how is it known that a) Elizabeth's maiden name was Maxwell and b) that they were both born in Scotland (he in Aberdeenshire).

All I can add right now is that Henry's wife Elizabeth's death would appear to be:

Elizabeth McNabb bc.1790 Ireland, d.3/2/1888 Dufferin, Ontario - informant John McNabb, retired farmer (son perhaps??).

The info came to me from a dna match, he had done very little research and I have not been able to find out where he got the McNab details from, however they are listed online exactly to his info. But interesting is the name of Maxwell as I have a large Maxwell tree in my line from Wigtown Scotland. I am convinced that the Elizabeth Maxwell has to be from Wigtown and some how connect to my Maxwell of Monreith family. I have a suspect family where Elizabeth Maxwell could fit if shes the one baptised 1758 but cannot prove it

Alexander Maxwell married 22 Oct 1756 Margaret Mccrackan at STRANRAER, WIGTOWN, SCOTLAND
Elizabeth Maxwell bp 5th May 1758 STRANRAER, WIGTOWN
William Maxwell bp 5th Mar 1762 at STRANRAER, WIGTOWN

How can dna provide a link to people who have no documentary evidence of having existed?

The dna donor descends from the son Henry McNab the one listed as being in the army. His own surname is Mcnab. I am assuming they have the name Thomas McNab & Elizabeth Maxwell from somewhere in their own records. The son Henry dies in Mulmur Corners, Dufferin County, Ontario, Canada. I think they had a death cert for Henry and maybe it listed the parents names on it? Canadian census for Henry could give info to.

A death record would not provide siblings names nor the place of birth of parents

Canadian census records only confirm that Henry was born in Ireland. He could have been born anywhere in Ireland as the whole country was part of Britain at that time. His parents could have been English and if they were Scottish their religion would more likely be Presbyterian than Church of England.

Have you checked for existing records in Canada relating to his arrival?

According to Henry Macnab's service record he was bc.1790 in Aughagower, Mayo, Ireland and enlisted aged 18 on 4/5/1808, discharged 5/6/1816.

At least 21 trees on Ancestry claim he was born 1785/6 but I would think his service record is more likely to be accurate.   His death certificate does not appear to have been found as his death on the trees varies between ca.1861 Melancton, Ontario, between 1861 and 1871 Grey, Ontario and 1870 Simcoe, Ontario!!

I agree with Sancti in that a religion of 'Church of England' does not fit with someone Irish or Scottish!   One tree I looked at had 'Thomas' living in London in 1790 and with his wife dying in London in 1825??   They also had her born in Yorkshire in 1762!  Another tree has Thomas born in Dull, Perth in 1762 and not Aberdeenshire.   Most trees just seem to be copies of each other!

The only definite with this line is that Henry himself is said to be born ca.1790 Aughagower, Mayo, and there seems to be no 'proof' of who his parents actually were, let alone his named siblings.

Without said proof of exactly who to be looking for it is extremely difficult to pursue this one.

Thanks for the help I'll never understand dna it bought up common surname with Henry McNabs descendant is Maxwell and Location was Scotland. Sadly there seems to be to little proof before Henry as you say born around 1785. I can't verify any of his brothers or his parents without knowing where the info came from. Pity

Pity also Henry Macnab's service record is not on findmypast, does ancestry have the full service record or just a transcript?

Henry MacNab's service record - brief though it is - is indeed on findmypast with birth year given as 1790.

I searched just now under Henry MacNab with the surname variants box ticked and this time just entered birth year of 1790 (having found it before).

It brings up just 2 entries (probably the second item relates to him too) and the first brings up Henry McNabb  in British Army Pensioners - basically just one page really.

Henry's relative?

Mcnabb    Joseph    1774    —    1816    British Army Pensioners - Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Ireland, 1783-1822    Aughagore, Mayo, Ireland

It was a very small place so I would say almost certainly a relative.

As to parish records for Aughagower?  Afraid I'm out of my depth when it comes to Irish records - all I know (as you have probably found out) that coverage of parish records is very poor, especially early ones, and those online mainly tend to be Catholic records.  The earliest records I can see referred to, but not online anyway, is from 1828.
