Title: Baptised Ballinakill, married Abbeyleix
Post by: KD146 on Monday 06 April 15 00:02 BST (UK)
I have a number of ancestors born and baptised in Ballinakill, though all the marriages I have for them appear as Abbeyleix.  They went on to live in Ballinakill.

My question is, was Ballinakill a sub-parish of some sort to Abbeyleix?  Why would Ballinakill natives not be married in Ballinakill?

I am going by Rootsireland transcriptions, where the parish is given as Abbeyleix.  Any comments or suggestions?

Link shows they are in adjoining Civil Parishes.  Ballinakill is in Dysartgallen Civil Parish  (20)

Marriages usually took place in the brides parish.

People could do whatever they liked and attend whatever church, mine lived in Co Monaghan but attended church 2 Parishes away, where all their records are, but they're buried in their own Parish...

Normally one start with the nearest Parish where one expect them to attend, if not found then look at neighbouring Parishes. The vast majority attended local church...

Were the marriages civil records?

If you read page 3 ("Introduction") in the link below about Registration Districts in 1871, it will explain the roots of the civil registration system in the context of the Poor Law Unions.

Page 6 confirms that Ballinakill was a sub-district of Abbeyleix.

In RC terms, the Abbeyleix area was part of Ballinakill parish until the 1820s. It would make sense that someone could have been baptised in Ballinakill, but if married after the parishes were separated, would be married in Abbeyleix.
