I am looking for the birth of Archibald Gordon. All his census records 1851-1891 give his birthplace as Aberdeen,Aberdeenshire. His marriage record states he lived in Macduff (and later he was in Banff). His death record, Glasgow 1898, gives his parents as Walter Gordon, born Aberdeen, married Macduff April 1827, and Catherine Lamont(d). Subtracting his age from the Census he could have been born anywhere between 1826 - 1831! Though I think 1828 is the best possibility. I have found the births of all other children of Walter and Catherine (1829-1835) but not Archibald and have run out of ideas, can anyone help with any other possibilities? Any advice would be so appreciated.Thank you

Have you looked for him under his mothers maiden name in case he was illegit? He is 13 on the 1841
-
Yes Carole I have had that thought and done that search thanks. And where were the other children in following census' ? It's all very confusing at times isn't it.
-
The 1841 census shows he and his siblings with his mother. I only have access to the transcription not the original image
Manners Street, Gamrie
Mrs. Cath Gordon 32 occupation vintner, born Banffshire
Archibald Gordon 13 Banffshire
Garden Gordon 10 Banffshire
James Gordon 8 Banffshire
John Gordon 6 Banffshire
Mary Gordon 4 Banffshire
Ann Colbert Lanes 50 No relationship. Indep. (independent means?)
I can't see a birth/baptism for him as yet.

Yes thank you Crisane. I have all the Census records for him from 1841 on, his marriage, all births of his children and his death. Just the birth record eludes me, so frustrating. I have searched and searched all sorts of sites for so long now.

In 1851
Garden Gordon 19 born Gamfrie was with Andrew Murdoch 77 farmer of 4 acres and his wife? Sarah Murdoch 75 at Bogs Of Mebrose Gamrie.
Can't see him in 1861 and 1871
Then 1881 is a very strange transcription on ancestry
71 Chapel St. Old Machar, Aberdeen
Garden Gordon Or Strachan age 52/1829
relationship - Wife
gender - Female born Insch, Aberdeenshire

Garden Gordon christened 25 October 1829, Gamrie, Banff, Scotland.
GAMRIE, a parish, in the county of Banff, 6½ miles (E.) from Banff; containing the burgh of Macduff and the villages of Crovie and Gardenstown.

You would think Archibald would be there too!
Could you check all 25 parishes in Banffshire?

Maybe Archibald just wasn't registered?
-
Thanks Crisane, I have the birth register for Garden Smith Gordon and he is definitely a male born at Macduff. I saw the female version also. Yes Whiteout7, I would have thought Archibald would be there too and also wondered if he hadn't been registered, though it seems strange all the other 4 children were so why wasn't he. . .

That is a very odd way of putting it. The kirk of Gamrie may be 6½ miles east of Banff, but the parish of Banff and the parish of Gamrie are right next to one another. The mutual parish boundary is the River Deveron between the burgh of Banff and the town of Macduff.

Forfarian,
The distances are usually calculated from town centre to town centre I think ??? :-\

They may be. However there is no town or even village known as Gamrie; the kirk stands alone.
The GENUKI page http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/Gamrie/index.html has a rather less than helpful description, but it also has a map showing where Gamrie is.
The Statistical Account of Scotland http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas/sas.asp?action=public&passback= has a rather better description
Or try Fullarton's Gazetteer http://digital.nls.uk/gazetteers-of-scotland-1803-1901/pageturner.cfm?id=97491772

I've found another Archibald Gordon in Aberdeenshire in 1851 but he was born in Kirkaldy, Fifeshire in 1829.
He is visiting Margaret and Elizabeth McKenzie in Greyfriars both the women were born in Aberdeenshire - Craithie.
But you found yours in 1851 with his family, so this is not him.
