Title: Charles Smith born Creeton abt 1818
Post by: sallyj on Thursday 02 April 15 19:43 BST (UK)
Hi,

Am desperate for some help please.

Charles Smith my 3x greatgrandfather states on all census he was born in Creeton Lincs.   I cannot find a birth record for him.   I've got his marriage cert and fathers name is left blank.   In 1841 he is living in Castle Bytham with a Robert Smith age 70, also living with them is Roberts daughter Frances with husband John Stanton and family.   All my Smith family come from Castle Bytham.   I've even obtained Roberts death cert in the hope of some info but no luck  The only thing I can think is Charles was illegitimate and Robert was perhaps his grandfather.   So I've worked forward from Robert he had 3 daughters who could potentially be Charles mother Elizabeth b.1798, Ann b.1801 and Alice b1802 and they were sent to the next parish to give birth.
All publications with births etc seem to end in 1812for Creeton.
Does anyone know if baptisms were still performed in Creeton after this date?  Even Lincs to the past have nothing.   I think I've tried every site going and have come up with nothing.
So any tiny little bit of info would be so appreciated.
Thanks
Sally

Just a thought but how old is Frances Stanton?

Could she have been his mother before she married and that is why they are together in 1841.

I think Frances is 30 on that 1841 census.

She's 39 in 1851, so even with rounding down on 1841 she's too young to be his mother.

Interestingly the youngest child William on 1841 could be with Charles and his wife Mary on 1851 - he's the right age. Also has the  middle name Stanton, which could be related to a Charles Smith - Mary Stanton marriage in 1842

Thankyou so much everyone for your replies.   I checked on William Stanton, but I found his baptism record, parents John and Frances.    This is so frustrating as I know the link is there, I just can't find it.  Again thank you

Possible?

CHARLES Smith Baptised 29 Jan 1817, St Paul in the Bail, Lincoln, Lincolnshire
Mother ELIZABETH Smith
Notes; House of Industry adjoining
(Source FreeREG)

I presume she gave Birth in the Workhouse Hospital.
He may have grown up in Creeton so he thought that was where he was born

That's 40 miles from Creeton, a long way to move a SMITH.  :-\

Hi Trish,

Thank you, that was the only one I found too, but like Geoff, I thought it was a long way to go.   I think my only option now, is next time I visit the UK, is make a visit to Lincolnshire archives.

Many many thanks everyone for your ideas and input
